HOW TO ADOPT.
PLEASE READ!
We feel that it’s time to post about the adoption process since we have spent an inordinate amount of time responding to messages from people primarily interested in Blake.
The first step in the process is to submit an application which can be found on our website. https://www.tibetanmastiffrescueinc.org/adopt-a-mastiff.cfm
It is our policy not to start discussing dogs with people who cannot take the five minutes required to fill out the application. This appears to cause intense irritation, because many people feel they should not have to waste five minutes of their time, but that we should waste hours of our time talking to people who have no real interest in adopting or who will be completely unqualified
If you complete our application, you will receive an automatic response, indicating that we have received it. We review every single application. However, very few will meet our initial criteria. For example, you must have secure, 6' fencing. The only exception to this is if you live someplace like Midtown Manhattan. Invisible fencing is not acceptable. Hundreds of acres are not acceptable. We will not waiver on this. In addition, you must come to meet us and to pick up the dog that you were interested in if you are approved. No, we will not send your dog to you via transport. We have only ever made an exception to this rule during the pandemic, when it involved somebody who had adopted dogs from us for more than 20 years, and lived in Canada. We understand this is a very large country, but we have had a number of people prepared to drive from the West Coast to the East Coast, or from Texas to Virginia, or from Minnesota to Texas, etc. The sad truth is that many bad things happen to dogs on no name transports.
Finally, you may have an excellent application, you may seem like a wonderful home, you may have secure fencing, and be willing to travel, but if we do not feel that we have a dog that is right for you, you will not hear from us. And by the way, asking us to let you know if we get a dog that might work for you, just isn’t going to happen. We have too much to do and too few people to do it to remember everybody. You need to stay in touch with us. Please understand that while many of the dogs in rescue are extremely friendly, some are on the more protective side of Tibetan Mastiffs, and will only be placed in an experienced home. Many do not do well with dogs of the same s*x, and will not be placed in a home with dogs of the same s*x, no matter how often we are assured by the adoptee that their dogs are very dog friendly. Some are uncomfortable with small children and if children are involved, the dog must be bombproof We do not want any dog or cat or person to ever be hurt by one of our dogs.
We realize that this may seem excessive and a general pain in the ass, but please remember, while we would like to be able to place every dog that comes through rescue in a matter of days, we need to get to know the dog and we need to find the right home for it. Of course, we have made mistakes, but we try to do everything we can to minimize those. Oh, and by the way, when at all possible, we will require a home check, so if you don’t want us to visit your home, or perhaps Google Earth will show us that in fact, you do not have fencing notwithstanding what you had told us, you will not get a dog.
We are sorry if we sound like The Grinch. And we hope this will not deter any good homes, but please remember, you must have fencing, and you must come and get the dog. No, we will not meet you halfway…
Oh yes - once we speak with you, we will call your vet and ask for references.

Maya is a beautiful 2 year old girl that came to us from Kansas, together with her sister, Lilly. Maya is very sweet with people, though every now and then there is someone that she takes a dislike too, and is good with other dogs as well. Maya is ready for a new home.

Blake is one of our more recent rescues, who is found wandering the streets of Newark New Jersey. Blake is only about a year old, and is extremely sweet with people. Blake came into rescue with a huge coat that unfortunately was matted to the skin, and so he had to be shaved. But never fear, come the fall, his spectacularly gorgeous coat will be back, better than ever. Blake is also ready for his new home.

Here is Gene, a very handsome guy, about three years old. Gene is part of the Illinois 27 and came to us very shut down. He spent some time in Georgia and then moved to Virginia where he is now, and has made great progress and is ready for his home.

It’s time for some photos of some of the dogs we have in rescue who are looking for their homes. Here are Eliza and Rose. Both are in southern Virginia. Rose (aTM/Malamute mix) is a wonderful girl who has never met a person she doesn’t like, however, although she is fine with other dogs on a casual basis, she needs to be an only dog at home since she gets very jealous of attention being paid to another dog by her person. Eliza is a TM, Great Pyrenees mix, who came in with her sister Maggie, who is adopted last month. Eliza is a very sweet dog and very playful.

It’s the weekend and we have an update. Norbu and Kansang are moving from Georgia down to Texas, where they will be fostered outside of Dallas. They are going to the same foster home that did such a fantastic job with Ella and Joni. So, if you’re in Texas (or Oklahoma for that matter or New Mexico) and you’re interested in adopting, we have two great boys who will be in the Dallas area! Many thanks to Julie and Judah and of course to Michelle and her mother!

Lily is also being fostered in northern Tennessee. She is an almost 2 year-old girl who, together with her sister, Maya, were seized by animal control in Kansas and tied up in a court case for almost a year and kept in solitary confinement at the local shelter. Not withstanding solitary, Lilly could not be more of a social butterfly or friendlier.

The exceptionally handsome Grayson is still looking for his home. Grayson was in the first group of dogs that we got of the Illinois 27. His two brothers and Eva have all found their homes, but Grayson is still looking. Grayson is just a year old, good with other dogs and cats and good with people. He does have a little bit more guardiness in him than do his brothers, but he is not a difficult dog. Grayson is good in the car and his travel to New Jersey and to Cornell for eye surgery and back again without any problem. Grayson is a great dog and really needs to find his home while he still a big puppy. Grayson is currently being fostered in northern Tennessee, but could always be brought to the kennel in southern Virginia.

Gene is one of the Illinois 27. Gene was very shut down when we got him but as you can see he is made huge strides and is becoming positively playful! Gene is about three years old and is in southern Virginia. He is good with people and other dogs and cats.

This is a courtesy post.

Whisky seems to be okay with smaller dogs and reacts more as they get larger. He was attacked as a puppy and may still be dealing with that. Depending on how he is introduced it also seems to be better.

We are in northern Virginia and I did reach out to the breeder who will post on our behalf. Unfortunately, they are located in Oregon and Tibetans are not able to fly.

Please find a note below and several photos and I appreciate your willingness to post on our behalf.

Whisky is a 3.5-year-old Tibetan Mastiff that we love dearly. He is wonderful with our friends, family, and our two teenage sons. He also gets along well with our Jack Russell Terrier and does fine with some other dogs. However, since I returned to work and can no longer give him the time and attention he needs, he has become more aggressive toward other dogs.

We have invested in training, including sending him to a professional program, but we haven’t been able to change this behavior.

We believe Whisky would thrive in a home with more space or with someone who has more experience handling dogs like him. Finding him a new home is a difficult decision, but we truly believe it is the best choice for him.
