Oh, well!
Last weekend was a really long one on the farm. We woke up Thursday morning to what can be a crisis on a small farm: no water—our well went out. Our team members (the florist and the tech guy) replaced the blown capacitors (shown above, the little cylinders at the top right) but the replacements blew again almost immediately. When Jon and Nick returned home they replaced wires and tried replacing the capacitors for the second time—but again they blew right away. By the time we were sure we needed professional help, the pump and well team couldn’t get to us until Monday. For five days we hauled water from our kind neighbors and sister farms. We flushed with buckets, showered at the gym or a friends house, irrigated crops with watering cans, and cooked with bottled water.
It was quite the weekend but we made it through and are up and running again. Thanks so much to our friends, family, and neighbors who saw us through this. As we always say; we could not do this without our community and you have our gratitude.

It’s prickly pear season!

These fruits of the nopal family of cactus (from the Nahuatl word nōpalli) are a sweet and colorful early autumn treat! The flesh, which has a mildly sweet, melon-like flavor, can be eaten raw by simply slicing it and removing the seeds. It’s great in smoothies and aguas frescas or it can be cooked down into jams, jellies, or syrups, making it a versatile ingredient for desserts. It adds a sweet freshness to savory dishes, and gives salsas and salads a refreshing twist. The juice can also be extracted to flavor cocktails, lemonade, or even ice creams.

Love is in the air on the farm!
This weekend we will be celebrating the love of two long-time CSA members and supporters of the farm—lets call them S and L. Everyone at the farm is honored that S and L have chosen our flowers for this sacred celebration. Each piece will be crafted in a garden-style using mostly greens, ferns and herbs with small touches of blooms to accentuate the wide array of textures that nature has to offer. Thank you for including us in your special day, S and L, and may your marriage be blessed with all the love and joy to be found in life.

A member of our farm family has been under the weather for a little while now and has been having trouble finding food that he wants to eat. This homemade smoothie (shown pre-packed for next day use)has been a sweet salvation. It has a whole ‘Faye Alberta’ peach, a big handful of California-grown strawberries (greens and all) from our neighbors at Natomas Farmers Market and another of our own fresh microgreens. We add some plant-based yogurt, honey, ice and whatever juice is in the house. It is sweet and refreshing with some nutrition for someone trying to get better. If you have a favorite locally-sourced smoothie ingredient, we would love to hear about it, we are gonna try to mix it up for him next week.

As quickly as it arrived, stone fruit season has faded away. Just this morning, we harvested the last of the Fey Elberta and O’Henry peaches from the orchard. We have just over 3 hundred pounds of these peaches, plus a limited supply of nectarines available in the online farm store and at our farmers markets this weekend.

We also want to take this moment to honor our mentor and partner who passed away earlier this summer, Bob Lemos. Bob planted and nurtured the small orchard we have been so fortunate to harvest from. It is his wonderful and delicious fruit that we are able to bring to our customers and we hope you enjoyed it as much as we have this year. Thank you to Bob and to his family who continue to support us as part of his legacy.

New this summer at the farm stand are these mini bouquets! The smaller arrangements are great as gifts, or to decorate bedrooms, bathrooms or any little spaces around the home that needs a bit of color. All of our floral arrangements are harvested and designed by hand each week by our own in-house florist.

While it may seem that the 2024 peach season just began yesterday, we are already a few weeks away from the finale. As summer goes on, the peaches get sweeter, juicier and more flavorful, which makes them ideal for that peach pie you’ve been thinking of baking, or to preserve for later months in jams or butters. You could also get creative and toss them with tomato and avocado for an amazing salsa, or really make an impression with a peach margarita.

Our peaches are harvested at peak ripeness each week, and will be available in the online farm stand and at both farmers markets for as long as the trees continue to provide us with fruit.

Microgreens are back in stock! These tender little greens are bigger than a sprout, but smaller than baby greens and can be used in a variety of ways. They bring add an extra helping of flavor and nutrients to anything they’re added to, including in salads or sandwiches, or as a topping on pizza, omelets and other prepared foods. Our microgreens mix includes kale, kohlrabi, mustard, arugula and cabbage.

Over the last year, we’ve been refining our microgreen growing process to offer them all year long. The seeds are germinated in darkness, but as soon as the seeds open up they are susceptible to mold. Any delay in uncovering them can either allow mold to creep in, or overheat amd roast the tiny sprouts. They also require frequent watering, and must be harvested at exactly the right time to be enjoyed at their perfect, tender size

As the farm has grown and evolved over the years, our methods for managing tasks and people has changed as well. Currently, there are several people involved in various different aspects of the farm including field work, floral design, marketing, and sales which creates a long to do list that can get overwhelming. To make sure the most important tasks get done and to avoid decision fatigue, we’ve started experimenting with a scrum board to visualize the never-ending farm to do list. Tasks are written on a post-it note and assigned by type and day, and they’re moved off of the board once they’ve been completed. So far, this has really helped streamline our workflow, and made it easier to prioritize the most urgent needs on the farm.
