Mississippi is the number one state for Heartworm disease. We diagnose and treat it every day, but it IS preventable. There is a lot of resistance to methods we used to use for prevention but we can combat it. Heartworms are spread via mosquitoes and it only takes one bite for your pet to become infected. We want them started on prevention at at least 8 weeks of age.

If your dog isn’t on an approved preventative, call us for an appointment and we will get your pet taken care of!

Where did the latest AHS Heartworm Incidence Survey find heartworms? in ALL 50 states.

Today is and we thought we’d share Dr. Smith’s own words!

“A prompt on a lot of veterinary pages today is getting us to think about when we decided to be a veterinarian... and my decision was my clearest first memory...

I was 3, and our dog was sick and I could tell something wasn’t right and my parents whispered a lot about it that day... it’s not like you could just take a dog to a vet on a weekend back then, so I guess they were waiting it out... but anyway, I clearly remember something waking me that night and I walked to the kitchen and peered around the door and my momma was crying and holding the dog and my daddy had his face in his hands, and I knew it wasn’t good news. And I felt completely and utterly helpless and I HATED that feeling and I never wanted to feel it again...so the next day I asked momma what a dog doctor was called, and she said, “a veterinarian” and I said then that’s what I’m gonna be.

And I never wavered....except that one week in kindergarten when I had colored some excellent pictures and said maybe I’d be an artist (obviously on the side!!) but apparently that was the day they interviewed us for kindergarten graduation... and so imagine my shock and horror when I walk across the stage at First Baptist Church in Ripley to get my diploma in front of everyone and they announce that I want to be an artist when I grow up.... I was beside myself after and Daddy was trying to calm me down and asked why I was so upset and I told him I had to be an artist now, and not a vet, but I wanted to be a vet!!! He told me to calm down and that I could still be a vet, but I wailed out, “But I already TOLD everybody”😭😭 Glad that didn’t end up holding me back! 😂

I didn’t realize til college that not everybody was so determined on their path or so clearly saw what their path even was... I always felt so lucky that I just knew what I was supposed to be doing... and the path was not easy... I had plenty of folks in my way who told me I wasn’t cut out for it. I’m just grateful I inherited sheer stubbornness from my family and charged on anyway... because maybe I wasn’t meant for the school but I was damn sure meant for the job. And 17 years later, I’m positive I was. I don’t always make the right decisions, I don’t know everything, but my heart is always fully engaged in helping people and healing animals, and I try and surround myself with people who do the same. It’s not always an easy day, but rarely is it an unrewarding one!

Almost everybody thinks they want to be an animal doctor at some point in their lives... but only a very lucky few get to do it. I’m so glad I’m one of them!”

Animals and the Eclipse…

Animals don’t watch the weather channel, so they don’t know about today’s eclipse… which means they won’t be staring at the sun like us, so they won’t go blind. They’ll probably not get upset about it getting dark either, they might just think it was an unusually short day. The horses might head to the barn thinking they got robbed on dinner but otherwise, it’ll just be a Monday to them!

Never hurts to keep them inside, but don’t stress if you can’t.

(This is a photo of the late great Dottie from the eclipse in 2017… we wish she was still here to watch with us today!)
