Spirit's Promise Weddings!
The team at Spirit's Promise Equine Rescue decided to turn a part of their property into a venue space as it has a unique energy. The Barn at Spirit's Promise offers couples an idyllic and rustic setting for weddings and related events. The venue is situated in the heart of Long Island's Wine Country, making it convenient to access for guests. The Barn spans 1,352 square feet and features the original floor from the 1850s. Adjacent to the Barn, the festivities can spread out on the 2,700-square-foot patio, where guests can enjoy the views of the sunsets and horse pastures.
Although Joker is our featured horse of the month for July, there’s no Joker without Diva! When Diva returned back to Spirit’s Promise in 2020, Joker nearly ran through or jumped every fence on the property to get to her in the trailer. Now they spend their days grazing the paddocks and living out their lifelong bond.
As you can tell in this video of Joker protecting her from the horse flies, Diva’s needs will always come before his. The Casanova has officially been tamed!
If you’d like to sponsor or contribute to the monthly costs for Joker’s hay, grain, and antibiotics, please visit www.spiritspromise.com/joker.
Our July Horse of the Month, Joker, is back for more attention! He and Marisa would go on long trail rides, finding themselves in the most precarious of adventures, where his protective instincts not only led them away from dangerous people on the trails, but also brought them back home countless times when she lost her sense of direction.
Joker will try his mightiest to steal the clothes off your back, but the only thing he’ll actually steal is your heart! If you’re interested in sponsoring Joker, please visit spiritspromise.com/joker
Joker
Our featured house for the month of July is Joker. Joker, born in 1997, is a stocky American Paint Horse who loves mischief. He served as a Cow Pony for most of his life until he was sent to a lesson barn to serve special needs children. Joker did not have the docile temperament needed for this, but his energetic and friendly personality made him a great fit at a trail riding barn, which is where he was rehomed once again. Marisa met Joker when her first horse, Spirit, was recovering from colic. She wanted to continue riding while Spirit was recovering and, when she met Joker, she immediately knew that Joker and Spirit would be her boys. Although Joker is just that, a joker who loves to nibble on people’s hair and buttons, he has also saved Marisa’s life quite a few times with his protective instincts and sense of direction. Joker’s home at the time was being shut down and any horse not saved was ultimately going to be sent to slaughter. Joker found his forever home at Spirit’s Promise in 2010 and has been the Casanova of Spirit’s Promise ever since. You can always be sure to find him right at Diva’s side, nipping any other horse who tries to interact with her. Joker’s big personality also makes him a great companion in the round pen with people in grief. In 2020, Joker was evaluated by the dentist/veterinarian and it was discovered he had a rotten, broken incisor. This turned out to be severe EOTRH syndrome (Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis), resulting in resorption lesions of incisors and canine teeth. Often known to be painful, Joker’s diet did not suffer. He was sent along with stall mate, Flirt, to the Cornell Ruffian Equine Specialist in Belmont, NY, to have his front incisors removed. With a restricted diet plan, pain medicine, and mouthwash, Joker has made a full recovery. After a year in recovery, he has learned to use his lips in place of his incisors to forage. Our chickens know there's nothing like cold watermelon on a hot summer day!
Pirate, our June Horse of the Month, becomes such a mush when he’s in his stall. Out in the paddocks he likes to lay low and eat his hay in peace and quiet, but as soon as his stall door closes, he becomes one our most attention seeking horses. As you can see, he loves his kisses and to be nose-to-nose with our humans. While we know he’s just looking for a hello and treat, you sure can get slimy passing by his stall. It's slime of love though, of course! If you'd like to help support Pirate, please visit our website:
