⭐️TWO EXCITING UPDATES⭐️

💕Lainey has been ADOPTED!!💕
When we met this sweet pup at the shelter, we knew she would be a great match for the Sotis family to foster! They are a Malinois loving family that we knew would enjoy her laid back, affectionate, yet playful disposition. Coming out of the shelter, Lainey was a little timid at first when meeting people. But the night we took her to them, she went straight from to them and just melted in all the affection.
We knew she chose them right then. ❤️💕🥰 The family felt the same about her and now it’s official!

What made this visit even more special, is that the Sotis family adopted Beowolf from us, who is now Ace. Lainey now has a brother Ace and sister Hazel!
When Ace came out of the shelter, he was severely underweight and malnourished. (The last 4 pics are of Ace and last pic has Hazel as well)
He has been living his absolute best life with them. We have shared pics of him enjoying the pool and basking in the sun.
However, this was the first time seeing him again in person.
The HUGE Mal in the pics is Ace! He is tall, gorgeous and there is not a rub or hip bone in sight. He is actually on a little diet right now, but we couldn’t be happier to see the transformation! Of course, he is still sweet as pie.

We love Happily Ever Afters!!!!

Different Types of Drives Sought After in Working Dogs:

One of the largest misconceptions in Belgian Malinois and Dutch Shepherds are that they:
#1 ALL CAN be or are police K9’s
#2 Are ALL high drive dogs.
These are simply NOT TRUE.
Malinois & Dutch Shepherds are known for their intense drives, which make them incredible working dogs. Here are the key types:

🔹 Prey Drive – The instinct to chase, bite, and capture moving objects. Essential for protection work, detection, and herding. This is why Mals and Dutchies excel as working and K9 Bite Sport dogs.

🔹 Defense Drive – The urge to protect themselves or their handler when threatened. A well-balanced Mal or Dutch channels this into controlled protection work, but an untrained one may react poorly under stress.

🔹 Fight Drive – The willingness to engage in a confrontation with confidence. This isn’t aggression but a dog’s ability to stand its ground and push forward under pressure—key for military and police K9s.

🔹 Pack Drive – The need for social bonding and working as a team. Malinois with strong pack drive are highly handler-focused and thrive on engagement.

A working dog prospect must have a high, intense, balance of these drives, in addition to solid nerves, sociability and confidence.
However, only a small percentage actually have all that is inherently needed to make an incredible working dog.
Those who don’t have the drive to be a great working dog, make fabulous pets for active families!

Available for adoption❤️
Hilo, a 10-week-old male Belgian Malinois with a stunning mahogany coat! This chunky little pup is looking for his forever home. With his strong bone structure, Hilo is expected to grow into a well-built, athletic adult.

Currently fostered in Yucaipa, CA, Hilo is thriving with a loving family and other dogs. He’s a playful, energetic pup who loves to follow his humans around and curl up at their feet. He enjoys affection, playtime with other dogs, and has already been introduced to cats, children, and new people—showing his confident, friendly and social nature.

While in our program, Hilo’s foster family will be working on crate training, potty training, and basic obedience to set him up for success.

Hilo is microchipped, up to date on vaccines, and dewormed. Like all dogs in our program, his adopter must continue his obedience training—essential for this intelligent, high-energy breed. Thanks to , local adopters receive a month of free weekly group obedience lessons to help Hilo develop into a well-mannered companion.

UPDATE: Bailey picked his perfect Happily Ever After Home!
🚨🚨URGENT🚨🚨
Bailey needs a loving forever home for the rest of his years. It is URGENT that we find him immediate placement, as his owner has passed and he needs a soft landing.
Bailey is a 9 yr old, GSD. Very sweet and affectionate, house trained, obedient and low energy. Wonderful companion!

Would prefer immediate permanent placement, as Bailey is a loving senior that just lost his owner. He shouldn’t have to bounce around through foster.

DFAM FAMILY, we don’t have time and NEED YOUR HELP getting the word out to find Bailey his new forever home!

Why Board & Train May Not Be the Best Choice for Your Belgian Malinois or Dutch Shepherd

Thinking about sending your Malinois or Dutch Shepherd to a board & train program? While it may seem like a convenient option, it’s often not the best fit for these working breeds. Here’s why:

⚡ Bond & Trust Matter – These breeds thrive on a strong relationship with their handler. Sending them away to be trained by someone else can create confusion and weaken your bond. They learn to trust and respect the trainer-not you.

⚡ Consistency is Key – Malinois and Dutch Shepherds need clear, consistent communication from their owner. They are highly intelligent. Correct timing of commands, behavior, reward & correction are crucial. A trainer can teach commands, but you need to be the one reinforcing and maintaining them.

⚡ Drive & Engagement Training – These dogs aren’t just about obedience; they need engagement and purpose. Many board & train programs focus on suppression rather than harnessing their natural drive in a productive way.

⚡ You May Need The Training More Than Your Dog – Not all dogs are the same and owning multiple dogs your entire life DOES NOT MAKE YOU A WORKING DOG TRAINER OR EXPERIENCED HANDLER. While this always ruffles feathers and no one likes to hear it, 90% of training these breeds is actually training the owner. It is imperative that YOU are there, open minded, listening and coachable. Throw everything you thought you knew out the door and go into training with an eagerness to learn and build the trust and respect with YOUR dog.

⚡ Only Work With Reputable Working Dog Trainers
Even for obedience training, you should only use reputable working dog trainers who specialize in protection, law enforcement and detection. They understand these breeds.

Instead of outsourcing training, work with a knowledgeable trainer who will coach you on how to train and handle your dog properly. Malinois and Dutch Shepherds aren’t just pets—they’re working partners who need you to be actively involved in their development.

‼️WISHFUL WEDNESDAY‼️
DONATIONS are at an all time low.
Fundraising efforts have not been coming close to our needs.
Wishful Wednesday and $5 Fridays have not been bringing in enough. We have two wonderful supporters that donate every month and have had some shirt sales. But even with that, we don’t clear $400. That doesn’t come close to the need.
The amount of rescues that are closing due to the lack of success raising funds, lack of volunteers willing to foster or help and slow adoptions is increasing every month.
We are a 501c3 nonprofit rescue, 100% volunteer based and 100% foster based. (As are most rescues). The California shelter crisis is getting worse. Shelters are hundreds over capacity and thousands of dogs are being euthanized each week.
The shelters are also experiencing low adoption rates, lack of volunteers and fosters.
Like most rescues, we are FULL. Meaning we do not have the needed funds and volunteer fosters to rescue anymore dogs. However, it doesn’t stop the nonstop requests from owners who cannot keep their dogs, shelters, euthanasia lists and networkers all begging for us to rescue and save more.
Help us GIVE THE NEEDED CARE, REHAB & TRAINING TO THE DOGS IN OUR PROGRAM TO MAKE SUCCESSFUL TRANSITIONS INTO THEIR NEW FOREVER HOMES AND CONTINUE TO SAVE MORE LIVES.

‼️FOSTERS URGENTLY NEEDED‼️

There are thousands of healthy, sweet dogs being euthanized each week in our Southern California animal shelters. The shelters are over crowded and rescues are full!

For DFAM to have room to rescue another dog/puppy into our program, WE MUST HAVE A FOSTER to take that dog in and help us ready it for adoption.

* WHAT DOES A FOSTER NEED TO DO?
The most important thing to know upfront, is that the current adoption climate in So Cal is pretty slow.
This means, you may have the dog/puppy for 30 days, a few months or longer.

We support our fosters, providing necessities such as veterinary care, bag of dog food monthly, crate and maintenance items.

A foster takes the dog into their home and treats it as part of their family. DFAM can provide 3 private sessions, teaching the foster how to crate & potty train their foster dog, in addition to starting obedience training. The foster is expected to continue working on the crate & potty training constantly each day and the obedience 10 minutes, 5 days per week.
Once ready, the foster & foster dog will attend training sessions with the renowned trainers at for one hour per week (4-8 total sessions). The expense of this class is also covered by DFAM.

Fostering is a fantastic opportunity to learn about dog training and gain experience with multiple dogs, give back and help save lives, get first hand experience in what it would be like to own one of our breeds and this type of volunteering looks great on a resume!

For those who are experienced working dog handlers that would like to foster a higher drive dog, they can participate in protection training as well as obedience (only with and under the supervision of our trainers and decoys). There is no better way to build your experience and knowledge than working with multiple dogs.

*WHO CAN FOSTER?
Foster must be local enough to Riverside, Ca to attend training and veterinary visits in the Riverside, Ca area.
Fosters must have a secure yard and no small children. Fosters with other animals, would be matched with a dog/pup that has been exposed.

Please use the link in our Bio to apply & more information.

We were happy to be back at the Murrieta K9 Trials! does a great job making these trials a community event and is very spectator friendly!

We met a bunch of wonderful people and always LOVE meeting some of our dedicated followers!! It is a lot of fun educating the public on the breeds, their needs and training.

Thank you to for helping to prep, set up, work the booth and tear down.

A new TShirt dropped and everyone loved it!

The Importance of a Gastropexy

If you have a Belgian, Dutch or German Shepherd- or other deep chested breed, you may have heard of gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), commonly referred to as bloat. This life-threatening condition is all too common and is usually fatal because it is rarely caught in time. In cases of GDV, the dog will bloat allowing room for the stomach to twist, cutting off blood flow to organs and requiring emergency surgery.

A Gastropexy is a surgical procedure that secures the stomach to the abdominal wall, preventing it from being able to twist when bloat occurs. It can be performed preventatively (often during a spay/neuter) or as part of emergency GDV treatment. A Gastropexy can be done laparoscopically for a less invasive option.

Why consider a gastropexy?
✔️ Prevents stomach torsion (twist), which can SAVE YOUR DOGS LIFE.
✔️ Reduces risk of GDV complications.
✔️ Is a lot less expensive than treatment for GDV (if you make it to the vet in time to be treated).

Be sure to FOLLOW for more health and training tips. SHARE to spread the word and help SAVE LIVES!

If you have a high-risk breed, talk to your vet about whether a gastropexy is right for your dog. Preventative care can save lives!

We use Dr Means at for our veterinary needs, including Gastropexy surgeries.

⭐️PUPDATE⭐️ Thanks to Dr Means at So Cal Animal Hospital, who was able to save both ear canals after two surgeries, to correct the horrid neglected chronic ear infection Brioche endured prior to being dumped at the shelter along with Ciabatta.
This means, she can still hear!!!

Even better news for this sweet girl is she has been ❤️ADOPTED❤️ and is living her absolute best life! Her name is now Georgia, which is so fitting. Georgia now has her Frenchie sister Olivia and the two of them couldn’t be any cuter 🥰!!

There is nothing more rewarding than being able to correct the neglect and place such a sweet, innocent dog into a 💕Happily Ever After💕

Donors, volunteers, fosters and adopters make this happen.

❤️Wishful Wednesday❤️
DONATE TODAY🩷
HELP US SAVE MORE LIVES! Donations have been becoming less and less each week. We MUST have the funding and fosters necessary to save more dogs from euthanasia. With the current animal crisis, we are seeing less adoptions, which means dogs are staying in rescue longer which equates to more expense per dog. This also means we must have committed FOSTERS. Short term fosters just are not an option. Help get those funds in place!

We also still have dogs & pups in our program that require training, food and maintenance.
Help us GIVE THE NEEDED CARE, REHAB & TRAINING TO THE DOGS IN OUR PROGRAM TO MAKE SUCCESSFUL TRANSITIONS INTO THEIR NEW FOREVER HOMES AND CONTINUE TO SAVE MORE LIVES.

The amount of rescues that are closing due to the lack of success raising funds, lack of volunteers willing to foster or help and slow adoptions has been increasing every month. Each rescue we take in needs treatment for any past trauma or upper respiratory infections, often causing immediate veterinary care. We take pride in training each of our fosters to the best of their ability while in our care.
