We hope you are all enjoying the beautiful weather we have been having!
It is going to get HOT starting tomorrow, which puts your dogs at risk for heatstroke. Heatstroke is a very serious emergency and can be fatal.
The dogs most at risk for suffering from heatstroke are dogs with a shortened nose (frenchies, pugs), senior dogs, dogs with lung disease or heart disease, overweight dogs, and dogs with thick coats.
Symptoms of heatstroke can include excessive panting, gasping, drooling, bright red gums, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, seizure, and collapse.
If you suspect your dog has suffered heatstroke wet them with cool or lukewarm water. Do not use cold water or ice packs! Do not put alcohol on their pads and don’t wrap them in towels. Get them wet, and turn on the air conditioner or open the windows. Seek veterinary care ASAP. This is a true emergency….dont wait!
In order to prevent heatstroke do not leave your dog in a car or other enclosed spaces on hot days. Leaving the windows cracked is NOT sufficient. Keep animals inside on hot days and make sure they have plenty of shade and water at all times when they are outside. Do not perform rigorous exercise when it is hot.
