December 2024 Update to Clubs
Eligibility of Championship Points for a Class Animal Awarded Reserve Best in Show.
The Delegate body at the Delegates meeting held on Friday, December 13, 2024, in Orlando, FL. has approved changes to Chapter 16, Section 2 of the AKC Rules Applying to Dog Shows which inserts verbiage to award championship points to a class dog awarded Reserve Best in Show. Points earned would be based on the highest number of points awarded in any breed from all groups excluding that from which Best in Show advanced. This will be effective for events occurring on or after July 2, 2025.

Reminder Regarding Specialty Club Events
Please be remined that as of January 2022 local conformation specialty clubs may hold up to four shows per year. Local specialty clubs have the option to hold one additional show in conjunction with their breed’s national specialty. Local specialty clubs may hold up to four designated specialty events in addition to the shows allotted in this section. There is no limit on national clubs.

Specialties Held in Conjunction with All-Breed and Group Shows
All-breed and group clubs are actively seeking specialty clubs to collaborate with in hosting events. They frequently provide financial benefits to specialty clubs by lowering the expenses associated with supporting their specific breed. Please contact AKC Club Development for assistance in finding potential clubs to work with.

Limited Breed Clubs (Groups) Events
Limited-breed clubs have the option to hold up to four shows on no more than three days in a calendar year. Limited-breeds clubs holding four shows may do so provided at least two shows qualify for the two in one day option.

AKC Event Operations Blog
The AKC Event Operations team maintains a blog that contains these, as well as other, updates to clubs. The blog is a useful resource of information and can be found here.

From the November/December Issue: “Will They Be Returning Our Entry Fees?”
By Caroline Coile

No. That’s the general answer given for the cancelled all-breed shows in the wake of Hurricanes Helene and Milton. And as much as these clubs probably wish they could, they probably can’t. Here’s why:

First, they don’t have to. On every premium list is this notice: “Entry fees shall not be refunded … if because of riots, wars, strikes, civil disturbances, national emergencies, health emergencies, and the dictates of law enforcement or of the owner(s) of the grounds and/or facilities or other acts beyond the control of the management, it is impossible to open or to complete the event, no refund of entry fee will be made. Extreme weather conditions, such as, but not limited to snow storms, hurricanes, lightning, extreme heat, heavy rains, or other circumstances including, but not limited to, the condition of the facilities or grounds and/or the ingress and egress from the grounds…” Read the entire article here: http://caninechronicle.com/?p=309657

Remembering James Reynolds

The Canine Chronicle is saddened to hear of the passing of judge James Reynolds.

Mr Reynolds became involved in the sport of dogs in 1956. He was a successful breeder of Scottish Terriers under the kennel name Renaldo where he produced many American and Canadian champions as well as several Canadian Best In Show winners.

In 1967, Mr Reynolds became a Canadian Kennel Club Judge, later becoming permitted by The American Kennel Club for all 7 groups. Mr. Reynolds was a familiar face at many AKC shows and judged over 60 National Specialties. Mr. Reynolds was honored to judge Best In Show at Westminster Kennel Club in 2006.

Jim was predeceased by his wife, Marcia, in February, 2022.

The Canine Chronicle extends our deepest condolences to his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by so many.
