Village of Riverwoods

Village of Riverwoods Incorp. in 1959 from property originally part of the Ryerson Estate, Riverwoods carries on The Ryerson's tradition of living in harmony with the enviroment.

Riverwoods is a unique community in the Chicago North Shore area that was originally conceived to allow residents to live among the trees. Incorporated in 1959 from property originally part of the Ryerson Estate, Riverwoods carries on Edward Ryerson's tradition of living in harmony with the environment. Situated on the banks of the Des Plaines River, Riverwoods has easy access to the transportatio

n, retail and business amenities of the North Shore but provides a quiet and natural respite from traditional suburban living. Many properties within the village are large heavily wooded lots accessible from private roads where some residents are able to house horses. We are a small community of about 3500 residents and share public services with neighboring villages such as Deerfield, Lincolnshire, Bannockburn and Northbrook. The village is managed by a Mayor and a Board of Trustees. The village also has it own Police Department to service the community.

We recently participated in the unveiling of a new park at the Village of Riverwoods, and of course, our boy Sheldon was a gem!

He brought so much joy to everyone, making the event even more special. Sheldon was such a perfect boy, he almost stole the heart of a Riverwoods PD officer's heart! We are so grateful for the community we are a part of, and thank you to Mayor Kris Ford, the amazing officers of the police department, and of course Village of Riverwoods for having us on this beautiful day!

And lastly, thank you to the community for their support and to Sheldon for being the best ambassador for our furry friends! 🥰

If the name of this bird confuses you, you are not alone. The Tufted Titmouse's name appears to come from the old Icelandic word "titr" (small) and the old Anglo-Saxon word "mase" (a kind of bird). Click here to read more: https://bit.ly/2LWAApa .

When you're trying to scope out the next open spot at the bird feeder...đź‘€

Dark-eyed Juncos (Junco hyemalis) are dark grey with a white underbelly and pink bill. Believe it or not, Illinois is one of these birds' winter vacation spots! They breed up in the Northern U.S. and Canada and spend the winter further South where they find more food. Check out this video of a Male Junco's call: https://bit.ly/3jR23Vu .

Fire can be destructive, but that's also what makes it a powerful rejuvenating force. 🔥 It's a natural part of the life cycle that removes dead brush, replenishes soil nutrients, and is needed for many native plant seeds to sprout.

The Village of Riverwoods encourages residents to safely use fire to maintain healthy woodlands through the Prescribed Burn Cost Share Program. Prescribed burns are safe when conducted by certified and trained professionals only. 👩‍🚒
