Remmi's List Highlight: Ahsoka

Ahsoka has traveled from the sunny shores of Florida to the picturesque landscapes of Virginia, and she's now ready to embark on a new journey. Ahsoka will thrive in a calm and nurturing environment that provides her with the patience and reassurance she needs, until she comes out of her shell. Ahsoka's anxiousness in unfamiliar settings is something that can be managed with understanding and care. With a loving and patient family, she can gradually build her confidence and feel more at ease. Ahsoka adores the great outdoors. Long walks, hiking adventures, and the chance to explore nature's beauty are all she needs to keep her tail wagging. With her gentle spirit and love for outdoor adventures, she's prepared to be your loyal and loving companion. Together, you'll create a story filled with new beginnings and heartwarming moments.

Remmi’s List is a list of animals in our care who are in the biggest need of short-term foster homes. Studies show that giving a dog or cat a shelter break for even a night or two significantly reduces stress which helps to make them more adoptable in the long run. Remmi’s list is made up of our dogs and cats here at the Angels of Assisi shelter who most need some time out of the kennels. These animals are either senior, long-term residents, in need of medical care, in dire need of a mental health break from the shelter, or all of the above. Our staff will even provide training on medication administration for our special needs animals. While the time in our shelter is temporary for all of its residents, Remmi’s list aims to highlight those who could use a vacation the most. If you’re interested in becoming a short-term pet foster parent to an animal on Remmi’s List, please contact [email protected]. Happy Take Your Dog to Work Day! Today, we’re hanging out with our new puppy, Buck who came to Angels of Assisi this week. He is a 7 week old Pointer Mix who does already know how to point, and has juvenile cellulitis which is also known as puppy strangles. Puppy Strangles is a noncontagious disease which causes his immune system to attack his skin. We’ve got him on a steroid to suppress his immune system to stop the attack, and an antibiotic for the resulting skin infection. Puppy strangles usually only lasts a couple of months, and once it gets better, it rarely comes back. Buck will be available for adoption soon, but if you would like to contribute to his care in the meantime, you can donate here or by visiting https://www.angelsofassisi.org/donate-now/.

If you took your dog to work today, share your photos below!

We’ve had two big dog adoptions two days in a row this week! Yesterday, our German Shepherd Mix, Nala found her forever home. She has a big fenced in yard and a teenager in the house to run with her! Bane, our Saint Bernard Mix found his forever home today after staying with us for just two weeks! He was a resident at another shelter for a dangerously long time, and now he will live in a house full of teenagers to play with who love giant dogs!

Over the weekend, we were lucky enough to witness a lovely reunion. Richard, a 15-year-old senior terrier mix came to us as a Guardian Angel dog when his homeless owner had to go to the hospital for a couple of weeks. With nowhere else to go, Richard stayed with us until his owner could care for him again. Once reunited, Richard howled with all his heart in his favorite human’s lap after giving lots of puppy kisses and hugs.

One of our foster kittens, 2-month-old Hopper was originally brought in with a severe upper respiratory infection which damaged one of his eyes beyond repair. The eye was uncomfortable for the kitten and was not getting any better. Yesterday, his foster brought him in to our veterinary team so he could have his ruined eye removed. His other eye is having issues as well, but we have hopes the remaining eye will improve. For now, we’re excited for this kitten to be able to hop, snuggle, and do kitten things with less pain and discomfort in his life.

After over 450 days of living in a shelter and recently moving to Kitty City Cat Cafe, we're happy to announce another staff favorite, A1 Sauce has found his forever home! In March 2023 A1 Sauce was found with 28 other cats in a hoarding house which was abandoned and locked for 10 days with no food or water inside. A1 Sauce was last kitty left from his rescue group as his trauma caused him to completely shut down. After being scared and combative, he gradually began to trust, accept treats, and eventually ask for pets. One year later, A1 Sauce is a snuggle bug who loves scratches and the occasional catnip toy who even sticks out his tongue when he’s feeling extra cuddly. Congratulations A1 Sauce and family!

THE MAYOR OF KITTY CITY HAS GONE HOME! After over a year of hoping for a forever home, A1 Sauce finally found the humans he was looking for! Not only are they kind, intelligent, and incredibly caring, but they already have senior cats, and have proven themselves to be pros at managing medicines and frequent vet visits. We could not have hoped for a more loving home for our sweet Sauce. A1 Sauce was one of the first cats that came into Kitty City and he had us all wrapped around his paw, so there were definitely more than a few happy tears here, but we're all so grateful that he's finally found the kind of home he truly deserves.

We had yet another happily ever after over the weekend! The WDBJ7 7atfour star Jessica Rabbit has found her forever home. Jessica was a staff favorite who would greet visitors by pressing her face against her door to ask for nose scratches. We will all miss her, but we are so happy to see her find her family. Congratulations Jessica!

On Friday we received two 7-month-old Pittie puppies, Anna and Lime from Floyd, Virginia. These sweet dogs lived outside before they came to us, and were absolutely covered in ticks. Our adoption and veterinary team removed the ticks and gave them 4Dx tests. Not surprisingly, we found they both have the tick borne diseases Lyme and Anaplasmosis. They will be treated for those diseases and dewormed incase they have any intestinal parasites from living outdoors. They have also been started on Simparica Trio to prevent any future fleas, ticks, or heartworms. Anna also has a case of cherry eyes which will need to be surgically repaired. Both dogs are very scared, but show a strong desire to trust our kennel staff. If you would like to contribute to Anna and Lime’s care as we get them healthy enough for adoption, you can donate here or by visiting https://www.angelsofassisi.org/donate-now/.

June is National Microchipping Month, so it’s a perfect time to get your pet microchipped! To celebrate, we are offering $15 microchips at our community pet health clinic until July 4th! The microchipping process is quick and easy. It is delivered just like a vaccination shot, and the chip is no bigger than a grain of rice. There is no need for sedation or anesthetic, and you and your pet can move on with your day directly after the procedure. Once you register your pet online, you can rest easy knowing your pet is much more likely to be reunited with you in case they get lost. If you’re interested in getting your pet microchipped at our low-cost Community Pet Clinic call (540) 344-8707 to set up your appointment or request one online at https://www.angelsofassisi.org/appointment-request/.

In addition to microchipping, pet owners can also enroll in Petco Love Lost. From our friends at Petco Love, Petco Love Lost is a free database that uses groundbreaking, patented pet facial recognition technology to help reunite lost pets with their families.

Remmi's List Highlight: Sharkbait

Sharkbait may be a Great Dane mix, but he firmly believes he's a lap dog. He’s ready to snuggle up with anyone who will have him. While Sharkbait may not hear as well as he used to, that doesn't stop him from enjoying life to the fullest. He may miss a command here or there, but his enthusiasm more than makes up for it. Sharkbait's social circle includes some furry friends, though he prefers the company of dogs like him who understand his larger-than-life personality. Unfortunately, he's not a fan of feline friends, so a cat-free household would be ideal. One thing to note about Sharkbait is his size. He’s a big boy! While he adores children and their boundless energy, he may inadvertently knock over smaller kids in his excitement. But don't let his size fool you; underneath all that brawn is a gentle soul who just wants to play and be loved.

06/13/2024

In animal shelters, a case where two animals who are strongly attached to one another who ideally should be adopted into the same home is called a bonded pair. When bonded pairs are adopted together, they typically live longer and they have happier lives as they are not grieving from loss, they do not feel the anxiety of being alone, and they are getting more exercise together. Unfortunately, bonded pairs do statistically spend more time in the shelter as finding the right home is more of a challenge. Currently, we have two bonded pairs in our kennels.

JOJO & FESTUS
JoJo is a 6-year-old female Hound Mix, and Festus is a 10-year-old male West Highland White Terrier Mix. These sweet dogs were adopted from Angels at separate times in the past. They’ve had a good life so far, but their owner is now in hospice and is unable to care for them.

JASPER & GINGER
Jasper is a 5-year-old male, and Ginger is a 5-year-old female. These adorable Terrier Mixes are litter mates who were also adopted from Angels of Assisi when they were puppies. Their owners are moving out of state, and sadly the pups aren’t able to come along. Jasper and Ginger have some skin issues healing up from having fleas for a prolonged period of time which should clear up soon now that they are on preventative.

If you are interested in adopting one of our bonded pairs, please fill out our application https://www.angelsofassisi.org/applications/ and email us at [email protected] for more information.

06/11/2024

Our volunteers are the backbone of our community outreach. Without them, we would not be able to get our adoptable animals out in the public as often where potential adopters can see and interact with them outside of the shelter. Without our volunteers, we wouldn’t be able to meet the needs of community pets where they live through programs like mobile clinics and our pet food pantry. Joe is one of the volunteers who helps us make the most of our resources. Since 2022, Joe has been helping with mobile clinics, donation giveaways, and adoption events. He loves interacting with the big “knucklehead” dogs. His favorite is Oscar who is one of our longterm residents. Oscar gets very excited when he meets new people, but Joe knows he’ll settle down once he has the security of a home. He hopes to see Oscar get adopted during his time volunteering with Angels. Joe has also been volunteering with our pet food pantry, Saleeba’s Store of Hope since it opened last year. He loves working in the neighborhood, and has befriended many of the people who come to the store for help such as a man who goes by Santa Claus. He knows he is helping to lighten their loads, which is his favorite part of his volunteer work. Customers of Saleeba’s have also befriended Joe’s beagle Natalia who he often brings to help brighten everyone’s day. Talia was an Envigo beagle adopted in July of 2022. Used as a breeding mother before her adoption, she was recently reunited with one of her sons living in Staunton through a Roanoke Envigo Beagle meetup group Joe helped to start on Facebook. Joe can often be seen riding around the Roanoke area on his bike with Talia in her trailer behind him. It is people like Joe, with a heart for community, who make Angels of Assisi able to help more people, and who make the Roanoke area in general a wonderful place to live.

On Saturday, during our Pet Health Fair at the Berglund Center, we got a visit from one of our Parvovirus survivors! Mia’s mom and dad brought Mia and her sister home in March from a friend’s litter of Australian Shepherd puppies when they were 8 weeks old. On the first day the puppies were home, the new pet parents noticed the dogs were acting sad and run down. Abruptly, Mia’s sister died the very next day, and they knew Mia was not just missing her littermates. Scared that Mia could be facing the same fate, they brought her to Angels of Assisi, where the veterinary team found she had Parvo. Mia started her outpatient treatment right away, and that very night, Mia began to perk up. The next day, she started to act like a puppy, and her bowel movements seemed to appear more healthy as well. After we saw the notable change in Mia, we sent the family home with the rest of Mia’s treatments so they could administer them at home for the remaining 3 days of the program. Now Mia is the healthy, playful, and wriggly puppy she should be. We were so glad to see Mia doing so well, and getting her vaccines updated at our Pet Health Fair over the weekend!
