“Kissing your baby changes your breast milk. Did you know that the undeniable urge to cover your baby in kisses serves a biological purpose? When a mother kisses her baby, she samples the pathogens on baby’s face, which then travel to mom’s lymphatic system. Mom’s body then creates antibodies to fight those pathogens, which baby receives through breast milk. What?! Amazing, right?”

These maternity beds are aesthetically pleasing, comfortable, and offer a seemingly safe co-sleeping option for mamas and babies. What else could you want from a bed in your maternity ward?

“So often women have confessed to me after their births that they feel they have "done it wrong" because they became vocal or felt out of control during birth. It makes me so sad to hear when women feel this way! Almost every unmedicated birth I have attended, mom has used vocalizations and movement and all sorts of coping mechanisms to get her baby into her arms. There is nothing wrong with that!!!! But often there is a feeling in the natural birth community that if you just trust your body and relax that baby will just slip out easily. Sometimes this may be the case, but usually not.
Prepare yourself to do whatever you have to to bring your baby earthside. There is no right and wrong, and stressing about how you 'aren't coping well' just because you feel the need to roar while pushing or moan during contractions is counterproductive and will keep you from feeling like the powerful warrior you are.”

Wow!! Imagine a hospital where vertical birth was not only practiced.... but preferred! The hospital in Otavalo, Ecuador has a 90% vaginal birth rate (vaginal!), of which approximately 75% are born vertically! The other 15% are birthed in a clinical room similar to North American standards. This means that only 10% of births are cesarean, which is 5% below the national Ecuadorian average of 15% cesarean births. Oh, and if THAT didn’t blow your doula mind... they are an intercultural institution where the Indigenous midwife (partera) has her own prenatal room, that resembles the inside of a home - with a fire place, beds, stove, and more! For over 20 years this hospital has been promoting these relationships and practices. The community feels supported, listened to, and connected through option and shared respect for their diversity.

It doesn’t matter if it’s your first baby or your sixth, we all have trouble telling whether it’s true labour or not. This can help guide you.
