Dogs have fears, esp things that are new or unknown. No need to force them to do things. This will only make it worse. Allowing the dog the process what they are seeing and allow them to approach at their own pace helps them to overcome fears and become more confident in public. This requires patience, time, and space. Remember, we don’t need them to love all new things. We just want them to not fear those things, so we can enjoy our time out together.

I love these soooo much!!! ❤️

Mom:
Hi, I wanted to give you an update. I try to walk Gus every day. We have hiked the bike trail in Roanoke and hiked the trails in Canyon Falls. I have taken him to a few different TSC’s - I plan to take him to Home Depot tomorrow. All I hear are compliments. I am constantly told that he is so well-behaved and what a nice dog. I am doing with him what I always wanted to do and he is a real pleasure for me. It is lovely to get up early in the morning and go to a trail by myself and not feel afraid and to have such an amazing walking companion. He does surge ahead occasionally but I stop and wait for him to look at me and return - it doesn’t happen often. He is not at all afraid in the stores and walks past everything without noticing. He hasn’t shown any fear at any time. He did put his head down and his fur went up on the trail today and he was staring intently at something he thought was ahead. I let him figure it out and then we went on. Anyway, thank you!! I so enjoy him. I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Michele

ME: This has totally made my day!!! Thank you so much for sharing!! This is exactly why I love my job!! 🥰
Good boy Gus!! I knew you could do it!!! 🙌

This timid lil man is Marshall (1 yr old Bernadoodle). He came to learn the basic manners. He was an over enthusiastic puppy with jumping, nipping, barking & no leash walking manners! This boy was a quick study in learning his new boundaries. Although, he was a lil nervous in public, he was able to focus on me and do all the things asked of him! Great job, Marshall! That’s a good good boy!!

Sometimes you can have too much of a good thing! You just need to have a balance of both. Teaching dogs to settle requires patience. For a dog that hyper focuses on fetch…..they can not teach this to themselves because it is foreign to them

I have so many people ask me how I get multiple dogs to downstay together! It doesn’t happen over night. I have to work with each of them individually until they understand what I’m asking them to do. I then add one more dog at a time! Sometimes each dog practices with a different dog each day. These are the same friends that play in the yard together so they have to learn to practice with the distraction of each other. I included some pics of some different stages we go through. Great job Coco, Thatcher, Bentley, & Sandi!! 🥰

This handsome friend is Doug (6.5 month old Standard Poodle). He came to learn all the basic manners and work on self control. Like many teenagers in this breed, Doug was overly enthusiastic about everything! He had to learn some boundaries about bossy barking and better polite ways to get the things he wanted! This boy was a quick study. He is an attentive boy who loves to please. I’m so proud of him and all his continued progress at home! Good boy, sweet Dougie!! # #
