Beaufort! I just love macaws , they are so stinking smart 🥰 Beaufort is our 35 year old surrender , he has severe arthritis in his feet and atrophied wings and was obese , but has come a loooooong way once we got him on the right diet he is a healthy weight and with the use of daily physical therapy and a natural anti-inflammatory sprinkled on his food he has become incredibly mobile 🥰
Long video of Wasabi interacting with Jonah 🩷
Macaws have always been my favorite of the large partot species , they are not neurotic , they are forgiving, easily handled , rarely if ever bite once they gain trust, they will hang out with you for hours and are extremely easy to read regarding their moods and rarely do they pick one person unless there is some sort of trauma in their past they tend to be curious about everyone they encounter .
Wasabi will be starting a topical Aloe treatment and 2 supplements next week to help her not be itchy , to encourage feather growth and help with the pain of new feathers coming in . She continues to come out of her shell and be very interactive with everyone.
Raider still not of fan of initial stepping up but that's typical grey behavior , once he's on your hand he's fine , eating well and will try anything you put in front of him. He stations well when placed on a tree and can occupy himself ( greys can become overly attached and this results in them becoming overly needy of your attention and can eventually result in plucking). He is spending more and more time out of his cage on his own . Seems to like or at least be indifferent to anyone he meets.
Honey is crazy , typical neurotic grey , shreds , chews, doesn't station well but we are working on that , she runs all over the house , in and out of cages , perches etc. And can frequently be found on the dining room chandelier. Also not a fan of step up and will be quite vocal about it. Seems to like or at least be indifferent to anyone she meets. Has a .5 second attention span , we will try to see if she will drink chamomile tea next week and make that part of her daily routine.
Lotus still HATES step up and Raptor gloves need to be used as she packs a punch of a bite . However once she is out of her cage she likes to sit on a tree and destroy toys , dance , and has started to tolerate the occasional head scratches, she is known to climb off her tree and wa
This is what emotional damage from an abused parrot looks like , this is what the struggle between fear and remembering somewhere in his life , someone treated him well and loved him , this is Spicey producing a macaws fear call but at the same time wanting to trust again by allowing human touch . He breaks my heart but he literally leaned against Jonah and allowed him to touch him. Macaws have a very distinct fear call which is what you hear in this video. It brought Jonah and I to tears , knowing Spiceys past probably started with love and trust and he ended up with someone that broke his trust and created a high level of fear. He's going to take so much time but this is a sign with love , patience and taking it slow Spicey has a shot at trusting again 🩷
I will say it again and again , if you don't have the time , the space , the knowledge , DONT GET A PARROT. These bigger guys have the mental and emotional intelligence level of 3 year olds.
Pinecones , parrots love them !!! Big parrots , small parrots they all love them !
Note: you can't just pick up pine cones and give them to your parrot. Pine cones must be free of areas where fertilizers, lawn chemicals and pesticides are used. If your in an area where any of these are used whether your yard or your neighbors be aware your pinecones are toxic to your parrot .
If you're in an area like we are with zero chemicals , your pine cones are safe ....BUT you have to neutralize any bacteria , fungus and little buggies by baking them at 200 degrees for 2 hours .
Just a quick update as it's been crazy hectic here , my elderly mother is moving from Pennsylvania closer to my brother in North Carolina , he was supposed to be there to assist but had to fly to Texas for my neices graduation from basic training in the Airforce so I not only have to cover that move next week , my daughter is due to go into labor anytime . Yesterday we drilled toy parts , the first box of 3 with toy parts for the toy orders arrived today so we will start work on toys tomorrow.
For those that donated to the foster 5 , we bought 25 already made toys to give them some immediate toys and we were able to purchase 4 boxes worth of toy making supplies for their bigger beaks . From your generous donations !!!
Spicey remains the most difficult rehab i have probably ever encountered , he is petrified , not scared ....petrified . He barbered his feathers wayyyy before coming to us , he appears to have stopped this behavior , he started chewing his toys and moving around his cage more . He screams relentlessly around most men , fear bites , can only be handled with Raptor gloves , but will calm down if I sing to him . He remains underweight but is at least eating better . This boy needs alot of TLC and alot of thought sent his way , somewhere under his fear , are signs he was someone's pet once , then thrown into a forced breeding set up , probably his owners had no idea they let him go to nasty unethical crap breeders , the parrot they put him in with didn't like him ( Wasabi) , they were on a cage the size I have my Indian ringneck in , so he became frustrated , untrusting, bored, aggressive . His eyes and expression say " I give up" . My heart goes out to this boy as he is so damaged and his eyes tell the saddest story .
We work with him daily and I can only hope we wake up one day to see a glimmer in his eyes letting us know he is ready to trust again 🩷
Jonah and Wasabi 🥰 You can hear her macaw sounds which means she is content and Jonah makes the noises back to mimic her. First steps to building trust ....head preening / scritches and mimicking their sounds.
Well we rearranged again so the foster 5 can spend out of cage time my entire first floor is now Parrot Heaven 🤣🤣
So this happened today , Jonah my son aka the parrott whisperer took Wasabi out of her cage because she's been very interactive , not only did she dance , wave , preen, spread her wings , she responded like she has known Jonah her entire life 🥰. This made me cry not only because she is progressing but I am always in awe of how my son has this ability and the love and security he shows these majestic creatures 🥰
Wasabi , Honey , and Raider video. Lotus and Spicey continue to be very stressed so we are keeping them calm I will get videos of them when we clean cages Wednesday.
