Beaufort! I just love macaws , they are so stinking smart 🥰 Beaufort is our 35 year old surrender , he has severe arthritis in his feet and atrophied wings and was obese , but has come a loooooong way once we got him on the right diet he is a healthy weight and with the use of daily physical therapy and a natural anti-inflammatory sprinkled on his food he has become incredibly mobile 🥰

I have 2 of these cages 25 each PM , must pick up . Both have been pressure washed and sanitized with F10 .

Anyone who would like the contact information for the person who has our conure pairs and who is interested in a future baby please pm me so I can provide you with the info.

We are going where our hearts have always been to the world of foster and rescue of these majestic beings.

Update on Honey one of the fostered 5, that's her on the dining room light 🤭

She is getting a bit more relaxed and she knows at least two words unfortunately her first words were in a deep man's voice and politely said" F@$$ you " 😬🤪

Adenovirus has now been found in the US for the first time in about 20 years , via a massive rescue of 50 plus parrots. All parrots had to be euthanized. I would be so cautious about who and where you purchase a parrot from. Adenovirus is highly contagious , no cure and is a horrible hemorrhagic disease. This is why we are going back to our roots of rescue , these breeding , horrid conditions and the mass amount if parrots out there is doing nothing but ending in more diseases , more sick birds , more hoarding and more euthanasia , it's become an epidemic.

We are back! I had to take the page down temporarily due to needing to focus on family and a couple of medical issues of my own along with focusing some targeted care on two of the fostered 5 by collaborating with the rescue on how to best work on the fear Spicey and Lotus have with people . We are back , we just may be slow to answer .

Let's talk elderly parrots:

Holly is going to be 57 this year, she is my age . Holly is an orange winged Amazon parrot. She was surrendered to me 6 years ago , when I went a well known silkie chicken breeder in bedford to pick up 2 pullets, there Holly sat in an old cage....in a chicken barn.

Interestingly the person had her complete history in a file. Wild caught from South America as a baby, ( open banded backs this up) purchased by a Florida pet store that no longer exists , Holly was the " store " parrot for entertainment 30 years . At the age of 30 she was purchased for a little girl in bedford , VA while they vacationed . Holly spend the next 19 years loved by this little girl , I was shown pictures , it was evident Holly was this little girls beloved family member all the way through her teen years. But the little girl grew up , got married, Holly got older. They bought a young Macaw who was " more fun" , Holly was relinquished to the barn because , like any Amazon she is very loud and it became disturbing to the new baby . They were basically waiting for her to die. Holly was given to me that day .

6 years later , Holly is showing signs of slowing down , everyday is a gift according to her vet. She drives me insane with her morning very loud screaming but that's what Amazon's do. She no longer preens well so has to be bathed daily or she smells like a wet dog, she has an old injury in her right wing which never was addressed and atrophied so she cannot spread her wings . She was in liver failure when she came here and had a raging fungal infection in her air sacs. 6 meds daily , an immediate diet change and the love from Jonah she has spent her golden years happy and content .

She has stopped playing with toys except will occasionally shred a coffee filter toy , she cannot see well in dimly lit rooms , she has to be kept on special perches now as she falls .
We have seen concerning changes but we will continue to modify her environment and give her the best quality of life . She will start on meloxicam next week for arthritis , turmeric for inflammation, unruffled Aloe spray will be added to her daily misting , red palm oil , among a few other things , we just ordered a side mount warming plate as parrots age they loose alot of the down that keeps them warm . Will are adding cross perches to help her navigate better, we are ordering a light bar for her cage .

Why so much info? Because your parrot WILL age , smaller parrots age faster , aging parrots need ALOT of extra care, accommodations, attention etc. Most people do what Holly's owner did and just give up .

We currently have Holly at 56 , Beaufort ( Macaw) at 35 , Izzy( quaker) at 15 all with special needs due to their ages .

Just because your Parrot ages doesn't mean they are disposable . I am lucky that all 3 of them , took quickly to Jonah who brought new life to them , all 3 had given up but with proper medical attention, tailored environments , proper diets and one particular human who saw past their ages and gave them a reason to enjoy life again .

Rescues are jam packed with elderly birds and because of their added needs , and expenses most are not adoptable. Plus sending them to yet another home is even more traumatic for the elderly parrot.

I often get calls or messages from people no longer able to care for their parrot especially special needs and elderly parrots , when I tell them I only do surrenders with signed contracts most walk away and ditch their parrot at the local pet store for store credit .
The parrot never gets vetted , the store asks thousands , is adopted and doesn't live very long .

Holly is our free , $2,500 orange winged amazon, that was her vet bill over her first 6 months in our home.

Please don't add a parrot to your home if your not prepared for them to grow old and deal with everything that comes with an elderly parrot .

Please send thoughts our way for Holly as we help her through this next stage of the aging process , her time is limited but we will love her endlessly 🩷.

Lost power at 6am due to power outage from the ice storms . Do you have a plan for outages in the cold weather for your parrots , it's going to be 24 degrees tonight . Parrots are good to about 40 degrees . We use a generator and plug an oil based heaters in the house no frozen birdies in this house 😁 Remember many space heaters are unsafe for parrots as are candles.

And no I did not put echo on the tree with Wasabi he waddled off his playgym and climbed up her tree 🤣

Long video of Wasabi interacting with Jonah 🩷

Macaws have always been my favorite of the large partot species , they are not neurotic , they are forgiving, easily handled , rarely if ever bite once they gain trust, they will hang out with you for hours and are extremely easy to read regarding their moods and rarely do they pick one person unless there is some sort of trauma in their past they tend to be curious about everyone they encounter .

Wasabi will be starting a topical Aloe treatment and 2 supplements next week to help her not be itchy , to encourage feather growth and help with the pain of new feathers coming in . She continues to come out of her shell and be very interactive with everyone.

Raider still not of fan of initial stepping up but that's typical grey behavior , once he's on your hand he's fine , eating well and will try anything you put in front of him. He stations well when placed on a tree and can occupy himself ( greys can become overly attached and this results in them becoming overly needy of your attention and can eventually result in plucking). He is spending more and more time out of his cage on his own . Seems to like or at least be indifferent to anyone he meets.

Honey is crazy , typical neurotic grey , shreds , chews, doesn't station well but we are working on that , she runs all over the house , in and out of cages , perches etc. And can frequently be found on the dining room chandelier. Also not a fan of step up and will be quite vocal about it. Seems to like or at least be indifferent to anyone she meets. Has a .5 second attention span , we will try to see if she will drink chamomile tea next week and make that part of her daily routine.

Lotus still HATES step up and Raptor gloves need to be used as she packs a punch of a bite . However once she is out of her cage she likes to sit on a tree and destroy toys , dance , and has started to tolerate the occasional head scratches, she is known to climb off her tree and wander over to Beauforts stand and climb up his stand and sit with him .( not so sure Beaufort likes this but Lotus doesn't care 🤣) . She is quite a challenge with fresh foods if she doesn't like the way it looks she will throw it across the room. She has started to come out of her cage on her own which makes her routine a bit easier. Definitely an older cockatoo . Very wary of anyone and everyone , still in the trust building stage , fear bites. Working on all of this with her.

Spicey ❤️ has been on turmeric for 2 weeks , he appears to have an old wing injury that was never addressed , very similar to our Holly. 2 weeks on turmeric over his food and he is eating much better and playing with his toys .
Pretty confident he is a senior bird now that we have had some time with him. Petrified of men however is starting some trust with Jonah . He does not fear call at all if it's just me and takes food from my hands now but any sudden noise or movement results in fear bites . Next week we will see if we can get him to start drinking some chamomile tea , which is calming to parrots to help his fear . Petrified of anyone and everyone , except me so he has become my project parrot . Fear biter. Can only handle with Raptor gloves , his rehab will probably be the longest I have ever worked with but it will be worth it .
