Wow! Yesterday's graduation ceremony was so very special! We are so grateful to all of you who joined us in person and who tuned in last night to watch the stories of our remarkable partner teams.

The Saint Francis Family just keeps growing! We are so excited to officially announce the birth of another adorable litter, born on September 29th, under the watchful eye of our Breeding Program Manager Kathy Marr and Tonya Harmon, our volunteer whelper.

Our sweet ZuZu is now the proud mother of six babies...four boys and two girls. The puppies will be expertly cared for as they grow and learn about the new big world around them over the next few months. When they are ready, they will start their journeys down the important path to becoming Saint Francis Service Dogs. These new puppies may someday become life-changing teammates for the people who need them....and YOU can help them on their way!

Did you hear the buzz? Our newest puppies have officially started their journeys to become Saint Francis Service Dogs! This week, they made their first big trip to Saint Francis after being lovingly and expertly cared for since their birth by our Breeding Program Manager, Kathy Marr...and of course, their mama, Beatrice. We had A LOT of fun with Bea and her little bumblebees buzzing around! We can't wait to see all that is ahead for them! As we continue to celebrate National Service Dog Month, we had to share these beautiful moments. Hank is a Saint Francis Facility Dog who was placed with Brandon Oaks last year. In his time there, Hank has easily become a treasured member of the Brandon Oaks staff. Using his highly specialized training from Saint Francis, Hank has been integrated into many activities that benefit residents in assisted living, long term care, and memory care. Happy September! And happy National Service Dog Month! This entire month, we are celebrating these exceptional dogs and the countless ways they impact, empower, and transform the lives of the extraordinary people they serve.

At Saint Francis Service Dogs, our mission is to help people with disabilities achieve their goals and have greater independence through partnership with exceptional service and facility dogs.

Look how much they have grown! Our newest puppies are 5 weeks old today! Over the last few weeks, they have experienced all kinds of firsts! Under the watchful eye of our Breeding Program Manager, Kathy, the puppies have started spending brief amounts of time in their outside play area. They are enjoying new meals of soaked kibble and spend lots of time playing with one another. Of course, all these big new things mean many naps along the way! We can't wait to see how they continue to change over the next few weeks as they prepare to start their important journeys to becoming Saint Francis Service Dogs!

Saint Francis is excited to introduce Dr. David Johns, our new Major Gifts Director! Dr. Johns grew up near Canton, Ohio, but fell in love with the Roanoke Valley when he landed here in 2018. He brings to Saint Francis extensive knowledge gained over a distinguished career in higher education and nonprofit fundraising, including serving as President of Ferrum College.

Outside of Saint Francis, Dr. Johns and his wife, Susan, enjoy spending time with their wonderful children and grandchildren throughout the country. He is an avid road cyclist, enjoys writing, and loves playing guitar and mandolin with friends.

Our newest puppies are two weeks old today! And my.... how they have grown! Mama Beatrice is taking wonderful care of them. They have all tripled their birthweight, now weighing a little more than 3 pounds. This week we may see them open their eyes as they continue to explore the new world around them!

Yesterday, we gave you a little sneak peek at our big news....and today, we are thrilled to officially share it! Last Monday, our beloved Beatrice gave birth to her second litter of Saint Francis Service Dogs-to-be! Under the watchful eye of our Breeding Program Manager, Kathy Marr, sweet Bea delivered SIX precious pups...perfectly split with three boys and three girls! (Did you guess correctly?)

Mama and babies are doing great! All of the puppies have doubled their birth weight in just a week. They are getting LOTS of love and attention and will be expertly cared for until they are ready to begin the important journey ahead of them. These tiny pups may someday become life-changing teammates for a child or an adult with a disability and we can't wait to see all that is ahead for them as they grow and learn.

Welcome to the world, little ones! We are so very glad that you are here.

It is the last day of National Service Dog Month! Thank you to everyone who has followed along and helped us to celebrate these exceptional animals! Here is a quick peek at what our newest litter has been up to over the last few weeks as they start their very important journeys. They have gone to their new homes with their amazing volunteer puppy raisers and have already started their weekly training classes with their raisers and our expert trainers! Gizmo, one of our Saint Francis Service Dogs in Advanced Training, has been working hard to learn all the tasks and commands he needs to know so that he can be the best partner to someone who needs him! For this Task Thursday during National Service Dog Month, Gizmo is showing off some position work. When given the command “Right” or “Left”, a Saint Francis Service Dog will line up close to the side of their partner. This is so important as they navigate the world together! We are back with another Task Thursday as we continue National Service Dog Month! Our little Spirit, a Saint Francis Service Dog in Advanced Training, wanted to show off one of her favorite commands…”Get it”! “Get it” is used to pick up dropped items or retrieve items that are out of reach. A Saint Francis Service Dog knows to retrieve the item, bring that item close to their partner, and hold it gently in their mouth until they hear the command “Give”. The “Get it” command can then be built upon…moving up to named items like “Leash”. Throughout their training, a Saint Francis Service Dog masters more than 40 skills and tasks that help their partner live a more independent and fulfilling life! #nationalservicedogmonth

Today, our candidates…the people currently waiting to be matched with a Saint Francis Service Dog…got the chance to work closely with some of our dogs in Advanced Training. During National Service Dog Month, we have decided to start a little thing called Task Thursday! Today, our sweet little Joie, a Saint Francis Service Dog in Advanced Training, is showing off her skills… “Bump” is one of the more than 40 tasks and skills a Saint Francis Service Dog masters to physically assist their partner. The bump command is used to help close cabinets, drawers, doors, or push buttons. It is also can be combined with other commands to complete more complicated tasks. With a Saint Francis Service Dog by their side, our partners are able to live more confident, independent, and self-sufficient lives.
