GREAT NEWS - We are scheduling our SUMMER Basic Obedience and CGC Preparation Classes! 2024 SUMMER Classes are now open for enrollment. Please pass the word around and let us know if you are interested...there are limited spaces left in each class.

BASIC OBEDIENCE CLASS
BIG DOG Canine Behavioral Training has teamed up with Therapets of Roanoke Valley to offer this educational class. This 7-week course is designed for dogs that are about 20 weeks of age or older. The main goal of this course is to teach owners how to properly train basic commands using positive training techniques. The emphasis will be on “marker” training methods within a positive and fun environment. The dog and handler teams will be taught the basics of how dogs learn, how to teach basic commands, how to read your dog’s body language and how to appropriately interact with your dog.

Hopefully, the owners and dogs will continue training and eventually become therapy dog teams. This is not mandatory but is encouraged. Either way, participants will get all the information needed to train their dog basic obedience commands.

This course will at least cover the following:
- Marker Charging
- Sit
- Look
- Down
- Place
- Come
- Wait
- Leave It
- Heeling
- Leash Walking

Classes will be held:
Fridays at 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm
August 2 thru September 20 (Skipping Aug 30)

Cost:
$100 per dog

CANINE GOOD CITIZEN PREPARATION CLASS
BIG DOG Canine Behavioral Training has teamed up with Therapets of Roanoke Valley, LLC to offer this advanced class. This 7-week course is designed for dogs that already know basic obedience commands and leash walking skills. The main goal of this course is to teach owners how to properly train and refine basic commands using positive training techniques. The emphasis will be on “marker” training methods within a positive and fun environment and will be geared towards mastering all the skills necessary to pass the AKC Canine Good Citizen Test. The dog and handler teams will be taught the basics of how dogs learn, how to teach and fine tune basic commands, how to read a dog’s body language and how to appropriately interact with another dog or strangers.

Hopefully, the owners and dogs will continue training and eventually earn a Canine Good Citizens Certificate. Upon completion of the course, we will schedule a testing date for those participants who are ready to take the test.

The course will focus on the following:

Down – duration and distance
Stay – duration and distance
Heeling/Attention
Loose Leash Walking
Sit/Stay – duration and distance
Down/Stay – duration and distance
Interacting with strangers

May 2024 Basic Obedience and Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Classes

TheraPets offers Basic Obedience and Canine Good Citizen (CGC) instruction with Adam Miller, owner of Big Dog Canine Behavioral Training. Classes meet on Friday nights; our sessions start in May 2024. The location is Windsor Hills United Methodist Church, 3591 Windsor Road, Roanoke.

Basic obedience begins on Friday, May 17, from 6:00 to 7:00 PM and ends on June 28. No dogs may attend the FIRST Basic Obedience class. CGC starts on Friday, May 24, from 7:15-8:15 PM, and the CGC test will be on July 12 (no class on July 5). Dogs WILL attend the first CGC class. We allow only eight dogs in each class and up to two human handlers per dog. Please, no children.

The fee for each class is $100.

Your space in the class will be confirmed when we receive your registration form and payment. You can arrange to pay at the first class, but no later. We cannot accept any registrations or payments after that first class. Credit cards, checks, and cash are accepted.

All Black, green eyes- indoor only, 9 year old, 8lb male neutered cat got outside 11/26 in Stone Manor neighborhood in Cave Spring. He is on medication so if you see him please reach out!
