Meowy Christmas Eve! The holidays are a wonderful time of year, but they can also bring hazards to your pets. Here are some tips to keep your pets safe this holiday season!

We are open this morning but will close early at noon and will be closed tomorrow on Christmas Day. We will reopen on Thursday, December 26th at 7:30am. In case of emergency, please call EVS at 540-563-8575 or Town and Country at (540) 382-5042.

We wanted to let our clients know that we are aware of the recent conversations about and updates from the FDA and Zoetis regarding Librela, a medication used to manage osteoarthritis pain in dogs.

As veterinarians, we closely monitor these reports to ensure the safety of our patients. In addition, we always work closely with our clients to evaluate their pet's individual needs and weigh the risks and benefits of any drug or treatment. If you have any questions or concerns about your pet and Librela, please don't hesitate to reach out to us to discuss with your veterinarian. We're here to help and our number one priority has been and always will be to ensure the well-being of your beloved pets.

We got to talk to students about all of the awesome careers working with animals and careers in veterinary medicine. If your kids go to Back Creek, tell them to stop by our table to say hi and get some fun goodies. Sheri has been a part of the Big Lick Vet team for over 17 years and before that spent years working in emergency veterinary medicine. Not only does she have years of experience and tons of skill, she also has a natural gift for working with animals and people. She has a heart of pure gold and treats each and every patient as if they were her own pet. Whenever we have a patient who doesn't want to eat, Sheri is the go to employee because she always finds a way to make them feel comfortable enough to finally eat. She has a way about her that makes the people and pets in her vicinity feel comfortable and safe. We're so lucky to have her on our team! ❤🐾

Rabies, rabies, everywhere! 😬 With the amount of rabies cases we’ve been seeing in our area in the past few months, we highly encourage you to ensure your pet(s) are up to date on their Rabies Vaccine. If you’re not sure of your pet(s) vaccination status or would like to schedule an appointment, call us at 540-776-0700.

⚠️ Rabies Alert

Three cases of rabies were confirmed in area wildlife yesterday. While rabies is common in our area, it’s unusual to announce cases so close together. These cases involve different species in separate jurisdictions, and they are not believed to be connected.

Rabies alert locations:

📍 Catlett Drive, Salem – Skunk

📍 Green Acres Drive, Masons Cove, Roanoke County – Feral Kitten

📍 Lee Highway near Blue Ridge Turnpike, Mill Creek, Botetourt County – Raccoon

To help prevent the spread of rabies:

✅ AVOID contact with wild or unknown domestic animals.

✅ REPORT injured or threatening animals to animal control.

✅ VACCINATE your pets and keep their shots up-to-date.

✅ CALL your doctor and the health department if exposed, or your vet and animal control if your pet is exposed.

Dr. Nelson has been a part of the Big Lick Vet team for over 17 years now and has left a lasting impact on the community, pets, and people she serves. Her dedication to the clients and patients as well as the team she works with is so appreciated. Over the years she's developed great relationships with many people and pets who travel far and wide to come see her! And you can always count on her Friday appointments filling up fast. She is always sure to thank her hardworking team of receptionists, assistants, and LVTs at the end of a long day and is always an advocate for their best interests. She has a wealth of knowledge and never hesitates to pass that extensive knowledge on to the staff and help them continue to learn and grow. 🥰

A friendly reminder about our upcoming Thanksgiving holiday hours. We will be closing early on Wednesday, November 27th at 5:00pm and then will be closed all day on Thanksgiving Day. We will be open on Black Friday, November 29th from 7:30am to 5:30pm. Our friends at Roanoke Roofing & Sheet Metal Co., Inc. started working on our roof over the weekend and will be working on it throughout this week and some of next week.
