It is, once again, time for the changing seasons... it doesn't seem much like fall as these past few October days have been so warm but, as nice as they are, this is perfect breeding weather for canine respiratory illnesses. These include canine cough and other viruses.
While City Dogs requires each dog to be vaccinated against these illnesses, it is not a guarantee that your dog will not come down with one of the many strains of respiratory disease. It is not ONE disease with ONE cause. Upper respiratory infections in dogs are common and can be caused by many different pathogens. Many of these infections have similar symptoms including a harsh, hacking cough which can be dry or produce a foamy, white saliva. Commonly, people think that their dog has “something caught in their throat.”
Canine cough is highly contagious and can be picked up anywhere your dog goes where other dogs have been.
The incubation period for most of these coughs can range from 2 days to as long as 2 weeks, meaning your dog can become infected and not show any symptoms for many days.
We encourage everyone to check your dog's vaccination history to ensure they are up to date on their vaccines and to always provide us with your most recent records.
If your dog does get sick, there's no need to panic. It really is just the equivalent of a human seasonal cough/cold. But, it can be hard to watch and listen to them coughing and hacking. A vaporizer can help.
If we notice any dog coughing, while at our facility, they will be isolated and their owners will be immediately notified to pick them up as soon as possible. We will then disinfect any area the dog has been in, using kennel specific products and protocols.
If you notice your own dog coughing or having a runny nose or eyes, please keep them comfortable and... at home... away from all other dogs, even at the dog park, for at least 2 weeks!
Thank you for your help in keeping City Dogs a healthy place for all of our guests!

We are requesting that if your dog wears a Seresto collar, please remove it before bringing them in for boarding or playcare! Dogs play with their mouths and we’ve had a few instances where the collars have been torn off by other dogs. We are concerned, if any pieces are ingested, it could be toxic. The health and safety of our pups is our highest priority. Thank you for understanding.
