Retractable leash injuries can include cuts, burns, or even amputations to both the dog and the owner due to the thin cord that can easily wrap around limbs, causing strangulation or severe lacerations; additionally, the sudden jerk when the leash retracts can lead to neck injuries or tracheal damage to the dog, and tripping hazards for people around them when the leash is fully extended.
Key points about retractable leash injuries:
To the dog:
Neck injuries, tracheal damage from sudden jerks when the leash retracts, potential for entanglement and cuts on legs if the cord gets tangled.
To the owner/people around:
Burns, cuts, or even amputation of fingers or limbs if the cord wraps around them, tripping hazards if the leash is fully extended and a dog suddenly pulls.
Reasons why retractable leashes are considered risky:
Thin cord:
The thin cord is easily tangled and can cause deep cuts or burns if grabbed while retracting.
Lack of control:
When a dog is at the end of a long leash, it can be difficult to quickly react to potential dangers.
Sudden jolt:
The sudden stop when the leash retracts can cause significant stress on the dog's neck.

We are very pleased to announce that as of mid-April, we will be moving to a new location! This larger facility will allow us to welcome clients into our clinic for in-person consultations about their pets, as well as increasing the capacity of our hospital for incoming and hospitalized patients.

Please stay tuned for more information as we will be hosting an open house once the facility is completed!

In Pennsylvania, all cats, including indoor-only cats, must be vaccinated against rabies by 12 weeks of age. The vaccination must be kept up to date for the life of the cat.
Why vaccinate?
Rabies is a fatal disease that can affect any mammal, including cats and humans.
It's widespread in Pennsylvania and can be transmitted to humans through bites or scratches.
There's a small but real risk that wildlife like bats or rodents can bring rabies into your household.
What happens if my cat bites someone?
If an unvaccinated cat bites or scratches a person, the owner could be held legally liable.
What if my cat needs a rabies vaccine?
A veterinarian can issue a certificate of vaccination and a vaccination tag for your cat.
You must produce a valid certificate of vaccination if requested by a police officer, State dog warden, or designated municipal animal control officer.
What if my cat can't be vaccinated?
A licensed veterinarian can determine if it would be medically contraindicated to vaccinate your cat.
