Stephanie Dixon and Valenzia are off to a great start in Harrisburg. They finished 4th in the 1.30 Junior/Amatuer division with a beautiful double clear round. The pair went second in the order out of 15 or so and held on to a podium position until the very last horse snuck in by a fraction of a second. Looking forward to the rest of the weekend for this team.

Congrats to Eva Montemayor on a 🥈finish in her first 1.20 class at the Club Hípico San Pedro with her new horse.

As we kick off showing at HITS Ocala Winter Week 4 today, let's take a moment to recap the first three weeks for Team Hay Fever Farm.

WEEK 1: Eva Montemayor showed two of her horses, moving up through the divisions, finishing strong, and sweeping the Junior Jumper .90s with Nahar as division Champion, and Beau as Reserve Champion. Eva was also 2nd in the Junior .90 Classic with Nahar and 4th with Beau.

WEEK 2: Eva Montemayor found continued success week 2, as we welcomed her third horse Cenizo LS to the show ring. In the Junior Jumper .90 division, Beau and Nahar each earned top ribbons while Cenizo LS finished the week as Reserve Champion. Eva and Nahar also moved up and found themselves Champion in the Junior Jumper 1.0 division. All 3 horses placed in the ribbons in the Junior .90 classic - Beau 2nd, Nahar 4th, and Cenizo LS 10th.

WEEK 3: We welcomed Lindsay Shapiro Skrmetta and Valero back to Team Hay Fever Farm to kick off their winter show season. Valero finished the week as Champion in the Amateur Jumper 1.0 division and was 4th in the Amateur 1.05 Classic Sunday.

Eva Montemayor dominated the Junior .90 division week 3. She was Champion with Nahar, with Beau and Cenizo LS tied for Reserve Champion. Eva and Nahar also clinched the win as the last pair to go in the .90 classic on Sunday. Cenizo LS was 4th and Beau finished 9th.

In the book “Outliers” author Malcolm Gladwell suggests that in order to achieve total proficiency in an endeavor it will require 10,000 hours of practice.

Whether or not Gladwell’s assumptions are correct, if we analyze that assumption, here’s what it means in terms of actual time.

Let’s say that someone rides for one hour a day, 7 days a week, and never misses one single day of riding. In about 27 years the rider will have racked up nearly 10,000 hours.

If the rider rides 14 hours a week, again never missing a day, that time to get to 10,000 hours will have been cut in half, to about 13 and a half years.

But for the rider who can only manage to ride one hour a week, it will take 189 years. 2 hours a week, about 95 years, and so on.
The point being that it takes one hell of a lot of practice to become really really really good at riding a horse.

There are far more riders who think they have put in enough time and effort than those who have actually done so in order to meet the 10,000 hour standard.

Figure out how many hours a week of actual riding time you average. Then multiply that by 52 to get an idea of how many hours of riding you average in a year. Then divide that into 10,000 to see where it puts you on that difficult road to high proficiency.

Here’s an example---Say I ride about 9 hours a week, which is quite a bit of time in the saddle. That’s about 468 hours a year. I will hit 10,000 hours in about 21 years.

This can be viewed as either discouraging or as a challenge.

“There's no easy way out
(There's no easy way out)
There's no shortcut home
(There's no shortcut home)”

(Lyric from one of the Rocky movies)

Yes, a bad rider CAN buy success in the horse world. Someone can do so by purchasing a better horse, and until that person’s inept riding messes up the horse, winning will be relatively easy.

But to become a GOOD rider, a GOOD horseman or horsewoman, the song lyrics are true. You have to do the work, obtain the education, get fit, get strong, learn how to sit the gaits with or without stirrups and not flop like a wounded chicken, develop that elusive “feel,” learn your sport, get your emotions under control.

There’s no easy way out, no shortcut if your goal is to be more than OK. Mediocrity is easy. And for sure it’s possible to hide mediocrity behind talented horses, but you will have to keep swapping out for new horses as you keep making your good horses into scared and messed up horses.

In sports like boxing, track and field, soccer, skiing, many others, there is no way to hide behind another being like a horse. You can’t buy magic skis, magic tennis rackets, magic running shoes, But you CAN buy a magic horse.

Riding sports let otherwise average athletes appear elite---for a while---But the good riders will know the difference, and will do the hard work that it takes to turn OK into so much more.

Choices----
