What Horses Have Taught Me...
Growing up we all have so many things we need to learn, in fact, we should never stop learning. That being said so many things I have learned a horse or horses collectively have been the teacher.
As a young man I was impatient with anger issues. Not really the best recipe for success in life and certainly not with one thousand pound animals. I didn't really know what I didn't know.
Well fast forward a few years and I was beginning to realize that the more I pushed and the shorter my fuse, the bigger the explosion. I now know that the slower I go, the faster I will get to the destination. It will take as long as it takes.
I also learned from horses that it really doesn't matter how fancy or important we think we are. They aren't impressed with life's shiney things.
I can remember years ago taking two mares to a competition in a rusty truck and trailer. It was what I could afford. No one had a desire to talk to me till after the competition when we won more money than my rig was probably worth. Suddenly people wanted to treat us different, but not my horses. In their mind, I was still the same.
Honesty, horses never lie, it's not their nature. I can always know what a horse is thinking, IF, I learn how to speak their language, and by speak I mean listen to understand.
Forgiveness, horses are probably the world's most forgiving creature, they don't hold grudges. Certainly something we should all strive for. I tell people all the time that their horse has forgiven them for mistakes they haven't even made yet. Think about that for a minute.
I could go on and on about what horses have taught me but at the same time they probably aren't done yet either. My biggest prayer in life is that I never know the last time I get to ride a horse.
