I just finished reading the book A Wing and A Prayer by Anders and Beverly Gyllenhaal. According to this book, the world has lost over 3 billion birds in the last fifty years. That is about 30% of an entire class of organisms in less than the span of a human life. Birds are the canary in the coal mine for our planet, and if we don’t pay attention to this warning, we will be next. The most impactful statement in this entire books was, “More birds are dying than are being born.” The next ten years will be critical for turning this crisis around.

How to Help Birds:
1. Prevent glass strikes – https://abcbirds.org/glass-collisions/products-database/
2. Keep cats indoors or build a catio to protect birds. If you have a barn cat like me, keep your cat locked up at dawn and dusk when birds are most active.
3. Help the next generation enjoy birds. Check out the book Audubon Birding Adventures for Kids as well as free K-12 science lessons on Cornell Lab’s website.
4. Buy bird friendly maple syrup, coffee grown in shade, and organic foods as much as possible.
5. Buy binoculars – I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – you can’t protect what you don’t know and care about.
6. Make helping birds a fun hobby with bird feeders, bird cams, Merlin Bird ID app and building bird houses.
7. Speak up – Audubon and American Bird Conservancy have forms on their website to fill out that will be automatically sent to your senator and representatives.
8. Join eBird or Project FeederWatch and become a citizen scientist.
9. Plant native so that your yard provides food, water and places for birds to build their nests. Native plants are far more helpful than bird feeders.
10. Leave dead trees if they aren’t a liability.
11. Avoid pesticides.
12. Protect seabirds from plastics – reduce your plastic use and participate in shoreline cleanups.
13. Join a Bird Nonprofit – the top four in North America are: Audubon, Cornell Lab, American Bird Conservancy and Ducks Unlimited.

So many times it feels like the problems facing our earth are so big that anything we try to do seems pointless. After reading this book, I can tell you there is still hope but we must act now.

A captivating drama from the frontlines of the race to save birds set against the devastating loss of one third of the avian population. Three years ago, headlines delivered shocking news: nearly three billion birds in North America have vanished over the past fifty years. No species has been spared...

Thank you to everyone who supported the National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasia this year by purchasing a neck cooling tie from me. I sold 21 ties, allowing me to donate 100% of the $210 earned to the NFED this holiday season. These neck ties are hand sewn by my daughters and I to raise awareness and support my third daughter who was born with Ectodermal Dysplasia. This is a cause that is near and dear to our hearts and we are grateful for every purchase made for this fundraiser. We will be sewing up more in the new year!

Go to nfed.org to learn more about Ectodermal Dysplasia and see the link below to see the neck cooling tie fundraiser.

I love that my new-to-me house came with a patch of jewelweed. This native annual self-seeds every year, and is a great herb to use to relieve the itchiness of poison ivy. It's also loved by native bees and blooms into October, which makes it one of my favorite plants. I am making the spray below this weekend, as my husband apparently rolled around in a patch of poison ivy. Again. Three leaves, let them beeeeeee!!! Jewelweed, yes pleeeease!!!

The "weeds" are so lovely this time of year! I am always amazed at how color coordinated nature is. Queen Anne's Lace and Chicory go so well together!

The weeds along the roads and highways right now are so beautiful. A few years ago I used the app PictureThis and learned the names of the flowers I see. This has really helped me feel like I am a part of the season, and that wherever I go, I am greeted by familiar and friendly faces. This is what inspired the below poem:

Nature's Brands
By Liz Timmerman

I can still name the business behind
A simple logo or a catchy tagline.
I recognized the brand of pants
By the pocket's stitches and slants.
I knew the make and model of each car on the road
Their grill and their style and how long it drove.
I remembered name brand snacks and treats
Without looking to see how the label reads.
And as for the popular music of the day
I could name every song that the radio played.
But lately, when I go for a hike
I wish all the green didn't look so alike.
To see a sea of foliage without any names
Like blurring words - it all looks the same.
Now I want to learn the names of the trees
To figure them out by the shape of their leaves.
I want to know when I take a walk
Is this little plant edible and who made that squawk?
What are the names of the birds -
Not only by their color, but also by what I heard?
I want to be fluent in flowers -
When they bloom and what are their powers?
Also, would the sky be more appealing
If I knew what the clouds were revealing?
At night when the stars shine through the dark
I would love to be able to decipher their spark.
I want to know more wild and be less tame.
All it takes if for me to learn their names.
Forget man-made brands
I want to understand the land.
Then wherever I go, no matter the season
Familiar faces will greet me and give me a reason
To smile and know, I belong here with them
And saying their names is a form of activism
Because you can't know what you can't name
And you can't love what you don't know.
Hello, my name is Liz and I like your petals
Did you plan to color coordinate with the nettles?
It's amazing to me that every field and forest I've met
Has taught me things that I will never forget.

In honor of Earth Day coming up this Saturday, here is a poem that I wrote this past week. It's been an interesting week, watching spring emerge from its sleep, but also seeing damage made by humans. We need to become more aware.

The bridge photo at the end was taken by Lucy Timmerman.

If you enjoy photos of bees, check out this album on Flickr. It was made in memoriam for the bee keeper of Belle Isle, Steve Burt (using his many photos). Steve introduced me to the Belle Isle Nature Center staff, and he was one of my bee mentors as well. I'm glad to see his legacy live on, with the many bee enthusiasts he inspired, myself included.

Part of the letter I put in the sign orders, which are flying off the shelf right now, a sure sign of spring!

"It is my hope that this little sign starts a revolution where it becomes not only socially acceptable to have weeds in your yard, but that the entire image of what is acceptable for a yard changes as well. Weeds are a steady food source for our struggling honeybees, as well as other beneficial insects. If we have consideration for the tiny honeybee, then respect for the rest of our earth will follow. Thank you in advance for helping our bees and participating in the education of your neighbors!"

Many Sweet Thanks!
Liz Timmerman
