We would like you all to welcome the newest Veterinary Vision family member! Oscar was a patient of ours that was in need of a home. We fixed up his eyes and Technician Krystal fell in love at first sight!! He's the perfect mix of sweet and sassy and we are so happy that he found such a wonderful home. Of course we had to set up a Christmas photo shoot for him. ❀🐾

Let's talk cone collars! Everyones least favorite part of veterinary medicine, but arguably one of the most important. In ophthalmology, the hard plastic cone collars are the only appropriate options to protect the eyes. The donuts leave the eyes too exposed to rubbing on the couch or your legs and pets are smart enough to learn to rub their eyes on the inside of the fabric cones. In order to properly protect the eyes, the plastic cone must be longer than their nose when you look at them in profile. It can take a couple days for your pet to get used to wearing a cone and it is important to remember that it's not forever, but it is so important to protect their eyes from further injury and allow them to heal as quickly as possible.

Is your pet still on flea and tick preventative? They should be! Most pet owners don't realize that fall is the worst time of year for fleas. They have been breeding all spring and summer so their population is the largest they have been all year and they are looking for a host to live on through the winter. With the warmer weather we have been having lately, both fleas and ticks are still active, so your pet should stay on a flea and tick preventative year round. Talk to your primary veterinarian about recommended flea, tick and heartworm preventatives.

Entropion is the inward rolling or turning of the eyelid margin. This condition occurs more frequently in the lower lid than the upper and is more common in dogs than cats. Symptoms include epiphora (excessive tearing), squinting, rubbing at the eye and in chronic cases corneal ulceration and vascularization. Most dogs with entropion require surgical correction. This surgery involves removing a small portion of the skin to tighten the eyelid. Temporary eyelid tacking may be used in very young dogs or until surgery can be scheduled to keep your pet comfortable. Definitive surgical correction is often delayed until the dog has a more mature head conformation at 6 months of age. If uncorrected, subsequent corneal ulceration, pigmentation, and scarring may produce vision loss.
