Some dogs might not have the same level of sociability as others, and that's perfectly acceptable.

Each dog has a unique personality, and much like people, they have their own preferences for social interaction. It's important to recognise and respect these differences.

A dog who seems more reserved or less inclined to engage with strangers isn't necessarily unfriendly or ill-tempered; they may simply prefer a more solitary environment or choose to interact primarily with their familiar companions.

When you encounter a dog whose interest in socialising isn't immediately evident, it's courteous to give them space.

Forcing interaction can be overwhelming and uncomfortable for them. By respecting their preference to keep to themselves, you demonstrate understanding and kindness towards their individual temperament.

Recognising and honouring each dog's personality not only contributes to their sense of security but also fosters a more respectful and trusting relationship between humans and dogs.

When your puppy or dog initially comes to live with you, he wants to know these things: What's the rhythm of my day? What's my relationship to each of these individuals? What are their relationships to each other, and how do I fit in? And, what are my rights and responsibilities?

Have you heard the one about mama dogs slamming their naughty puppies to the ground to punish them? Well that's not how it goes.
It goes more like this: momma dogs just make sure everyone is okay. In the video, the puppies are engaging in normal play that may be taking a turn toward the serious, causing momma to intervene.

No means no.
A dog is entitled to say no and have it respected.
Violating your dog's boundaries breaks trust.

When you're watching TV dog trainers, you are not watching behavior change, you're watching behavior suppression and fear. Competent trainers do not elicit problem behavior for viewing pleasure. It's done to create drama and make money and dogs and dog owners suffer for it (and dog owners have signed non-disclosure contracts so the word never gets out).

TV shows have the power to influence how dog guardians view their dog’s behaviour and what training method they will use to solve problem behaviours.

I recommend this all the time. It's a great thing to do with all dogs, but especially those who are experiencing difficulties. Not much for a webinar? There will be links to printed material in the comments.

"Replacing the phrase "I had to. . ." with "I chose to. . ." puts the responsibility where it belongs: on the trainer who made the choice to use techniques or equipment. It helps us all remember that in making that choice, by definition we excluded other possibilities."

So I'm meeting with a client in a little while and I'm getting my pouch ready. I have chopped up 4 different kinds of soft treats into tiny cubes because she's little. Buy why four, you may wonder. Because hopefully one of these treats is going to be super-ultra-special, and when I pull it out of my pouch she's going to be really happy to get it. This kind of punctuated happiness increases the willingness to keep trying and/or keep learning in hopes of getting the most-special reward- 'not this time (oh well), maybe next time!'
You'll notice some bigger pieces set apart in the lower left corner. Those are for my dog for when she stays on her mat and out of the way while I'm working.
Also in my bag of tricks are some Cheerios and a Jif To Go peanut butter cup. What's in your training bag?

The "alpha wolf theory" is wrong on two counts. One, dogs are not wolves and two, the alpha wolf theory was developed through observation of wolves in captivity. It was later rescinded by the man who developed it because wolves in the wold live in family groups. So, it's like saying we can understand human family structure and relationships by observing men in prison.

I've been running into a misconception about walking your dog lately so, let me clear it up: The only time your dog needs to walk right beside you is when you are navigating traffic; crossing the street or walking around other people, for example. What your dog does need is to explore and smell the smells. Yes, your dog needs to learn how to heel to navigate traffic but it's more important to your dog's good health and happiness to have ample opportunity to experience the world through their primary investigative sense-their nose. This is important mental activity and when a dog is soldiering along beside their person, they are missing so much. So be sure to give your dog ample time to stop and smell the trees and hydrants just as long as they like.
