Today is observed as International Animal Rights Day, and this year we have two stories to share about why they are so important. Read their individual stories in the comments below:

*CHERRY PIE*
Cherry is 2 year old mixed breed dog that was at the local shelter here in Rochester. She came in with a cherry eye, dry skin and hair loss, nails very long, and emaciated. As she spent a couple days there, it was noted she had pain in her pelvic and hip regions and rear limb lameness after walks. Then she ended up at the emergency vet…

We all thought that she may need surgery and the shelter is not a great environment for a dog to recuperate after major surgery, so RTPA stepped in to get her into a temporary foster home. She was stabilized and seen at our vet where she seemed to improve and start to recover, without surgery! We were very excited about that, but that is not the end for Cherry. She still has pain in her rear limbs and pelvic and hip areas. The vet believes it may be a spinal injury of some kind and she is getting pain management for that while we navigate next steps.

Cherry is looking for a long term foster home that can help her continue to recover now that the emergency is over. She needs a home with ground floor access to the outside (not a lot of stairs). She does not mind other dogs, but should not be playing and excessively running and jumping either. She is a very sweet dog who needed a chance, we started that, but now we need someone to help us help her get better.

*HOLLY*
Holly was pulled from a hoarding situation in Kentucky along with several other small breed dogs and their puppies. She was thrown onto a transport to get to us that same day, because the shelter has been overloaded for weeks and would have euthanized them all.

She came in underweight, with extra long nails and nervous about all the new changes. Again, we found a temporary placement for her and she is starting to settle in beautifully. She is dog friendly, and does well with people after being introduced. She does like a good lap to snuggle on. She needs a place to continue to thrive and feel safe in, now that she is out of that situation.

We do not know either one of these dog’s complete history or the details on how they got into this condition. But we do know, they did not do it to themselves. Humans domesticated dogs a very long time ago and have since been tasked with their care and welfare. In both of these cases, the humans have failed them. Whether intentionally or not, the conditions in which they were forced to survive were unfair at best, abuse at worst. Not conditions any living, sentient being should be have to endure. And yet it continues, while small rescue, non-profits, shelter, and individual people do their best to combat this every day. Today, we could use some help. Both of these beautiful dogs are looking for foster homes to show them that humans do not always fail, that they can be trusted to give love, safety, and warmth back to our most loyal companions. That their rights matter. And that they deserve to find their own happiness in a world that does not always have what it takes to save them.
