When we send a dog off into their adoptive homes, we do so with the greatest of hopes that they have found a loving home for their entirety of their lives. Especially when they have already struggled so hard to survive. Stella and her siblings were found in a box as very young puppies. They were burned and covered in maggots. They dealt with weeks of infection and healing. After she was better, she was adopted and we were thrilled.
We do our best to be a support system for our adoptive families, offering advice and resources where we can to make our pairings as successful as possible. But not every story ends that way.
Our high hopes crashed this weekend when we received a call that this sweet girl, Stella, was injured following an accident at home. Here are the facts as we know them:
Stella is a happy, large breed puppy with no formal training
She has lived happily with another dog and two small kids
She was reported to us as being fearful, of one individual.
She was reported to have had an interaction with this individual which included a bite, a fall, and an assumed broken leg.
Stella was turned back over to us where she was seen first thing confirming she does have a clean break above the knee on her hind leg. The vets have reported to us it can be fixed. But as with everything else, it will cost money and time. But Stella was and IS one of our Rescued Treasures, which means we will do our best by her.

In the world of rescue, we often receive urgent requests to assist dogs in need, and Cherry Pie’s situation was particularly critical as she faced euthanasia at 2 PM. We managed to rescue her just ten minutes before that deadline.
Initially, we knew very little about her condition, which presented as a medical mystery with potential issues like an obstruction or spinal injury. After an overnight stay at an emergency vet, we transferred her to our regular veterinarian, where we discovered that her obstruction had resolved. However, she appeared fearful and unsteady, which we later recognized as signs of pain rather than anxiety.
Cherry Pie has since begun pain management and is responding well. She has enjoyed socializing with new dog friends and meeting people, and she is currently seeking a foster home that can provide her with a calm environment during her recovery.
