Mental Health Monday: Dog Edition

With Thanksgiving upcoming this week, please see below for some helpful tips to keep your dog safe and the holidays running smoothly for your guests and home!

If you plan on gathering with friends and/or family this week for US Thanksgiving, there are a number of things you can do to keep your dog (and your visitors) safe.

Remember, there is nothing "wrong" with your dog if you need to manage amid all the chaos; that is 100% normal. Many dogs don't do well with large gatherings, changes to their routine and all the tempting food readily available.

Mental Health Monday: Dog Edition

READ IT AGAIN: Behavioral issues, not infectious diseases, are the number one cause of death for dogs under three years of age.

There are ways to properly socialize your dog AND keep them safe. Ask us if you need help to learn how.

MYTH: "Don’t take your puppy anywhere until they're fully vaccinated."

FACT: "The primary and most important time for puppy socialization is the first three months of life. For this reason, the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior believes that it should be the *standard of care* for puppies to receive such socialization before they are fully vaccinated. Behavioral issues, not infectious diseases, are the number one cause of death for dogs under three years of age." (AVSAB Position Statement on Puppy Socialization)

FACT: If you wait until your puppy is full vaccinated, you've missed their critical socialization period.

Vets, rescues and breeders who are clinging to the outdated belief that dogs should be prevented from socialization until fully vaccinated are not keeping up with the current research, literature and recommendations from behavior professionals.

Mental Health Monday; Dog Edition!

Your pet’s mental health matters too, and we want to start sharing some tips to improve your dog’s life and YOUR life with your dog!

PSA: Just because your dog doesn't growl or bite when your child handles them roughly, it doesn't mean they should have to tolerate it.

The onus is on the parent to teach children age-appropriate ways to interact with dogs.

The responsibility of safety is NOT 100% on the dog.

Teach the kids, not just the dogs.

Along with Buddy Love, we pulled this family from the local shelter so they could be raised in homes before finding their own! Our foster currently has them for the next few weeks, and puppies need supplies!!!

We are looking for donations of supplies and items for this family if you can help:
- Gallon Water / Water
- Puppy Pads
- Purina Puppy Food (Dry and Canned)

Donations are going to: 3022 Brick Schoolhouse Rd, Hilton NY, 14468 and can be left by the garage.
