Welcome to February and our Wild Bird of the Month, the Blue Jay!

Here's our second fact of the month: Blue Jays are beautiful, aren’t they? Interestingly, they aren’t actually blue! The blue coloring comes from a visual trick called “Structural color.” Blue light is refracted back through the structure of feathers while the other wavelengths or color are absorbed. If you were to grind up a Blue Jay feather, it would be brownish. As comparison, a ground up male cardinal feather would be red. All blue colored birds used this trick - peacocks, parrots, even bluebirds.

Question for GroomingTails: Why is my haircut cheaper than my dogs?

While it might seem surprising, dog grooming can be more expensive than getting your own hair cut. We asked our knowledgeable groomers - why is that? A dog grooming session is more than just a haircut - it’s full service! Karen listed out the treatments we would pay separately for in a salon: “They get a mani & pedi, full body bath & dry, ear cleaning, and a full body hair cut. Plus, our groomers offer a stinky service that’s no fun for pet owners and your hair dresser would charge a premium for: a**l gland expression.

Beyond the full service, humans are a bit more well behaved while getting a haircut. “Human don’t bite or dance while getting a haircut. OR p**p on the table!” Aurie laughs. A groomer is trained to handle your dog gently and safely, often taking more time and patience than human haircuts. Additionally, each dog breed has specific grooming needs, and groomers must be knowledgeable about the various styles and techniques appropriate for different breeds. “We have put years of skill in learning to work with animals and master their various needs” according to Mac.

Week four; you'll have to keep your ears open for this one. Cardinals are known for their rich, clear songs. Both males and females sing, which is somewhat unusual in the bird world, as typically only males sing. Their songs can include a variety of whistles, trills, and chirps, often heard at dawn and dusk.
