On a cold and rainy December evening this week, Rochester Animal Services' Animal Control Officers responded to a call for a dog in a dumpster. Upon arrival, a small dog greeted our officers, shivering in the dumpster along with its dirty crate.

The pup, now named Buddy the Elf, was carefully retrieved from the dumpster by the responding officers and transported back to the shelter. The officers stayed past the end of their shift to bathe Buddy, ensuring he was safe and warm until the medical team could do a further exam the next day.

Buddy was then transferred to Lollypop Farm for additional love and care. The criminal case has been referred to their Humane Investigation team. Meet our foster pet of the week, Flutter! 💓❄️ She’s still a young pup with all the happy puppy energy, and her bouncing and prancing is sure to make you smile. Her perfect day includes playing with her stuffies and running in the snowy yard, then settling down next to you for some cuddly TV time. She loves to play with other dogs but is still learning her social cues, and is looking for a family who’ll help her perfect her adult-dog manners.

Ever wonder how your $5 can change a life? Let’s talk heartworm. 🐾

Heartworm cases remain a significant challenge in our shelter, with an average of 32+ cases annually. If left untreated, heartworm is ultimately fatal to these loving animals. Here’s what we’ve faced in recent years:

◾ 20 cases in 2020
◾ 32 cases in 2021
◾ 53 cases in 2022
◾ 38 cases in 2023
◾ 21 cases in 2024

✨ The good news: Heartworm is treatable!
💔 The challenge: Treatment costs around $1,500 per dog and can take up to 8 months.

Even small contributions add up to provide life-saving care. Just look at Lenny, our most recent success story! His new family shared:
"Lenny was so easy during treatment—he loved his pills mashed into bread and waited patiently for his treat every day. Now that he’s healthy, he’s a happy couch potato and best friends with our other dog!"
