When you get your 8 week old puppies, please keep these images in mind. Their bones do not even touch yet. They plod around so cutely with big floppy paws and wobbly movement because their joints are entirely made up of muscle, tendons, ligaments with skin covering. Nothing is fitting tightly together or has a true socket yet.

When you run them excessively or don't restrict their exercise to stop them from overdoing it during this period you don't give them a chance to grow properly. Every big jump or excited bouncing run causes impacts between the bones. In reasonable amounts this is not problematic and is the normal wear and tear that every animal will engage in.

When you're letting your puppy jump up and down off the lounge or bed, take them for long walks/hikes, you are damaging that forming joint. When you let the puppy scramble on tile with no traction you are damaging the joint.

You only get the chance to grow them once. A well built body is something that comes from excellent breeding and a great upbringing-BOTH, not just one.

Once grown you will have the rest of their life to spend playing and engaging in higher impact exercise. So keep it calm while they're still little baby puppies and give the gift that can only be given once.

If you haven't seen it yet, we are going to play with the weaves again on Saturday October 19th in a morning and afternoon workshop. The first is a continuation on the 2.0 workshop of finding entries and exiting and and for those who really want to work on distance and difficulty there is 3.0 in the afternoon.

As always, each dog will be taught based on their current understanding of the weaves. You don't need to have taken the previous workshops.

Bring your notebook.

If you have a new agility dog and are interested in beginning weaves, please let me know at [email protected] and I will do the Fresh Start Weaves workshop.

Hope to see you there.

Chris

Over the years, many breeders, trainers, and owners have said that puppies should not be exercised until the growth plates are closed. I have been asked to radiograph 12-month-old dogs to make sure their growth plates are closed. Recently, a well-regarded colleague told me that he had an owner that....

Repost from Susan Perry. I really enjoy ASCA trials and the competitors are a lot of fun.

Hi All--
The March (16-17) RAT (Rainier Agility Team) ASCA trial will be taking day of show entries! We have a lot of folks coming but if you want to play agility with your dog (the weather will be awesome!!) on Saturday and/or Sunday, you can come down to Run Wild Dog Sports (formerly Argus Ranch for Dogs) in Auburn, WA and enter the trial the day(s) of the show!! We will be offering two rounds of each class (Jumpers, Gamblers and Regular) each day, all levels!! Here is some information about ASCA agility:
"Thinking about trying ASCA agility? You will find ASCA trials relaxed and friendly. We welcome all breeds and mixes. Don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions.
A few things to remember:
Your dog can’t wear a collar when running.
Nice training in the ring is permitted – you may pet and touch your dog when in training mode, but no food in the ring. At the discretion of the host club and limited to one-ring trials, toys may be used in training. You must show it to the judge when you enter the ring. You will have up to Maximum Course Time (MCT) to train; then you must leave the ring when your time is up.
Your dog does not need to be registered with ASCA to compete; however, if you want your qualifying scores tracked for titles, you will need a QT number. ASCA registered Aussies have their ASCA registration number, and all other dogs (including Aussies registered with other registries) need to apply for a QT number.
Applications for QT numbers can be found on the website or by asking the Trial Secretary at the competition.
If you have a height card from AKC or NADAC, or a copy of the USDAA Dog Information page showing the dog’s actual height, you can use it to verify your dog's jump height. Include a copy with your entry or show it to the Trial Secretary. If you have no height card, your dog will be measured at the trial to ensure it’s jumping the correct height.
If you don’t want to jump your dog at full height, ASCA’s ACE program will let you jump 4” lower and receive more time to qualify." Or you can show your dog FEO, For Exibition Only.
If you have additional questions about ASCA agility, let me know. The premium for this trial is on the RAT (Rainier Agility Team) website and on the ASC of WA website.
Come join us for a lot of fun! Our judge is Susan Byrne from Texas and she is a blast!
Remember, you can come and volunteer and get a front row seat for the trial or part of the trial (a half day of you volunteering is always a huge help)!!
The trial will be held at Run Wild Dog Sports (formerly Argus Ranch for Dogs) in Auburn, Washington!!
