We’re so proud to share our 2025 Annual Report with you (link in bio)!

From our Executive Director, Nathaniel Mich:
“We’ve grown and improved in every area of operations: programs, communications, HR, finances, Board development, strategic planning, and fundraising. Even with all that’s changed, our core commitments remain the same: we are people-centered, partnership-based, constantly learning, and always in service to the needs of our communities.

With the very concept of an equitable food system under attack, it’s the hundreds of gardeners, volunteers, youth, donors, and funders who contribute to this work and to their neighborhoods who carry urban agriculture into the future.”

“What began as a vacant lot has become a thriving community garden with the help of Taproot’s workshops, resources, and community. Their steady support helped me turn uncertainty into confidence and growth.

It’s why I serve on the board and give back as a monthly donor: long-term support is what allows organizations to take root and continue to grow.”
~ Ketsia, Beechwood Beauty Community Garden & Taproot Board Member

Taproot focuses on building long-term supportive relationships with community gardens, because we know that’s what they need to thrive.

This year, help grow something lasting. We can build a Rochester filled with thriving neighborhoods and thriving youth, together.

Our modern industrial food system is really good at moving huge quantities of mass-produced food thousands of miles, but it’s more fragile than it looks.

Over the last few years, we’ve seen how pandemics, climate change, and wars all impact the shelves of our supermarkets. Now we have a federal government that slaps huge tariffs on food imports but is also actively hostile to local food, food pantries, and low-income folks, all of which just makes it harder for us to buy food.

Urban agriculture and community gardens have a long history as tools of resilience and adaptation in the face of political, climate, and public health crises. When supply chains falter and governments fail to meet community needs, the simple act of growing food on vacant lots or other reclaimed spaces can have a huge impact on families, neighborhoods, and whole cities.

As threats to local food systems continue to grow, we expect to see more and more people turning to urban agriculture to protect their health and their communities, and we will be ready to support them.

Make a tax-deductible donation to Taproot & join your neighbors as a sustaining donor!

Rochester’s community gardens are more than green spaces—they’re classrooms, job sites, and leadership hubs for young people. Here, youth learn about agriculture, project management, environmental justice, and community organizing while improving their own neighborhoods.

đŸŒ±When you become a sustaining donor, you ensure that this work continues through every season. Your support fuels positive youth development, strengthens food security, and expands sustainable community-driven agriculture.

This year, help grow something lasting. We can build a Rochester filled with thriving neighborhoods and thriving youth, together.

đŸŒ±Impact That Takes Root Over Time:
$5 - Did you know you can plant crops almost all year long? $5/month covers the seed needs of a typical community garden for a growing season.
$10 - Our Youth Interns eat a lot of snacks! $10/month helps make sure we’re fully stocked all year long.
$20 - We love hosting volunteers and workshops at First Market Farm. $20/month keeps the tool shed full and the coffee pot hot!
$50 - Make a lasting change for a community garden! At $50/month, you’re helping install bigger projects at gardens, like herb spirals, outdoor classrooms, or new landscaping.

🎁As a special thank you, if you become a sustaining donor by the end of the year, we’ll send you some Taproot swag in January! Keep an eye out for new perks and exclusive invitations for our sustaining donors!

“When my son first signed up to work for Taproot, I was actually really worried that he wouldn't come out of his shy and timid way of being. As time passed, I saw his social and intellectual growth.

By the end of the program, he impressed me with how he was so interactive with his work and team. I loved seeing it and would recommend it for anyone starting a new journey. Thank you to the Taproot team for encouraging him along the way!” ~ Raquel (Youth Intern’s mother)

From shy beginnings to confident teamwork, this is youth development in action.

This growth doesn’t happen overnight, and it doesn’t happen alone. When youth are encouraged, they build confidence that lasts a lifetime. This is what your sustained support makes possible - one season, one young person at a time.

❄As we reach the winter solstice—the shortest day and longest night of the year—we’re reminded that growth doesn’t stop when the garden goes quiet. Beneath the frozen ground, seeds and roots are resting, gathering strength, and preparing for what comes next.

đŸŒ±In the same way, our work continues under the surface all winter long—investing in youth, strengthening partnerships, and laying the groundwork for a season of deeper impact.

As the year comes to a close, we invite you to help nurture these seeds by making an end-of-year gift or becoming a monthly sustaining donor.

Your support now ensures that when the light returns, youth leaders are ready, gardens are resourced, and Rochester’s neighborhoods are poised to grow and thrive.

We’re so excited to welcome Adenike back as our new Youth Employment Program Assistant! After working with us this summer, Adenike will help us grow our year-round youth employment programs.

“I'm super excited to join this amazing Taproot family! I'm ready to see our youth program and youth leaders flourish in the upcoming year.”

Originally born in the Nation’s capital and raised in P.G. County, Maryland, Adenike came to Rochester as a student of the University of Rochester in 2016. She double majored in Dance & Movement and Africana Studies.

Adenike’s main passion as an undergrad was researching ways to restore intergenerational storytelling and heal melanated and Indigenous people through the arts, including their connection to their land.

After graduating in 2021, she worked as a Performing Arts teacher at Rochester Prep High School for 4 years.

In the summer of 2025, Adenike worked with Taproot’s Summer Youth Program and fell in love. The rest is history!
