Beeswax is produced by honey bees through a fascinating process. Here’s a brief overview of how bees make beeswax:

1. **Wax Production**: Worker bees have specialized wax-producing glands on the underside of their abdomens. These glands secrete a substance that hardens into wax scales.

2. **Wax Scales**: The bees collect these wax scales and chew them to make them pliable. The chewing process also mixes the wax with their saliva, which helps to shape it.

3. **Comb Construction**: The chewed wax is then used to build hexagonal honeycomb cells in the hive. These cells are essential for storing honey and pollen, and for raising young bees (brood).

4. **Comb Use**: Bees use the combs to store honey and pollen, and to protect and nurture their larvae.

Thank you to ALL those planting locally native flowering plants that benefit pollinators wherever YOU live in the world, Dandelions are not native to all areas of the planet but please continue to leave some Dandelions when mowing as they provide nectar for bees and other pollinators in the Northern Hemisphere. 🌼🌼

Dandelion (genus Taraxacum) are flowering plants in the family Asteraceae, which consists of species commonly known as dandelions native to Eurasia and to North America, but the two commonplace species in the wider world, T. officinale and T. erythrospermum, were also introduced from Europe and now propagate as wildflowers in those regions including North America where they are considered introduced. Both species are edible in their entirety. The common name dandelion comes from French "dent-de-lion", meaning "lion's tooth". Like other members of the family Asteraceae, they have very small flowers collected together into a composite flower head. Each single flower in a head is called a floret. In part due to their abundance along with being a generalist species, dandelions are one of the most vital early spring nectar sources for a wide host of pollinators that themselves are critical to pollination of later flowering plants.
