Ok. A couple things to know and compare when evaluating what direction to go with the food...
One bag of our Freeze-Dried Raw Chicken would last a 40lb dog about 5.5 days. It breaks down to about $12.36 per day. This is a very competitive price for raw but, of course, you're currently paying a lot less with a cooked food. Let's take a look at some of the differences:
*It is only 1.5 lbs (compared the 5.5lb bag of Freshpet you're currently buying), but it is freeze-dried. That means it's had all the moisture removed so it's much lighter, but actually more nutrient-dense, and also does not need to be refrigerated. The freeze-drying process pawTree uses gently dries the food at negative temperatures removing 98-99% of the moisture, but retaining virtually all of the nutrients.

* This process also creates a structure that will rapidly and almost completely rehydrate when water is reintroduced at a later time if you prefer a moist food (especially important for cats).
*"Fresh" or "lightly-cooked" pet foods (like Freshpet) will have similar GA's to canned dog foods, moisture content similar to frozen raw. The feeding guidelines of those foods will be similar to raw food.
*The primary difference, beyond what's mentioned above is that these foods are "lightly-cooked" at 165-200°F. This process retains many more nutrients than kibble, but still cooks out around 40% of them.
*raw retains A LOT more of the nutrition from the ingredients
*Freshpet contains oats and rice bran
*Freshpet contains salt
*pawTree also has Chicken Hearts and Chicken Gizzards (in addition to chicken and chicken liver)
*pawTree's is 76% chicken and organ meat, 24% wholesome fruits and vegetables and other nutrients
*pawTree's raw GA of 42% protein is more than double that of the Freshpet at 14%
*pawTree's metabolizable energy (ME) is a whopping 5000 kcals/kg compared to Freshpet's 2168 kcals/kg - this is the energy in the food that is actually absorbed by your pet. Put another way, this is the amount of energy left for your pet after the digestion process is complete. The higher the ME the more energy benefit your pet will receive from a small amount of food.
*pawTree's raw doesn't need to be refrigerated (or frozen)
*AND you can feed the same food to your cat as well!
All of that being said, I totally get that a budget is a budget! This food also makes a great topper. Just replacing 25% of each meal with raw can make a big difference in their health. So that's another thing to consider.
