With heat waves sweeping across the country, blue-green algae is appearing in new areas and posing an increased risk to pets.

Found in lakes, ponds or any source of standing water, it’s extremely toxic and consuming it can be fatal. The best way to prevent accidental poisoning is to keep a close eye on pets when they’re around water.

If you think your pet has been exposed, take them to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital and contact the ASPCA Poison Control at 888-426-4435.

Meet Honey, a beautiful two-year-nine-month old domestic medium hair mix cat with a Tortie coat. Rescued from inhumane living conditions, sweet Honey is now ready for a loving, forever home.

She can be shy at first, but Honey has lots of love to give. She prefers a quiet home, due to a heart condition that her friends at the shelter can explain to Honey’s new family.

Once comfortable with you, she will be a real lovebug who loves treats, a cat tree and a soft bed. Kids older than 12 are okay, as is another confident cat in the home. Honey will do best without a dog in the house.

Like all pets from the SPCA of Texas, Honey has been spayed, microchipped and is up to date on all her necessary vaccinations. She is housed at the Dallas Animal Care Center (2400 Lone Star Dr, 75212), so drop by any day from Noon to 6 p.m. to meet her. She’s eager to make your acquaintance.

Through the end of November, all adult cat and adult dog adoptions are free.

Meet Biscuit, an eight-year-old, mixed-breed female weighing in at 50 pounds. She’s ready for a loving, forever home with someone who will give her all the cuddles and treats.

She might be a bit older, but she loves long walks and making friends with other dogs. Biscuit is a loving and affectionate fur-ever friend. Her smooth coat is mostly white, but she has the cutest brown, floppy ears and deep, dark eyes.

Biscuit currently is being treated for heartworms, so she will need a calm home to relax in because of exercise restrictions while undergoing treatment, which is provided by the SPCA of Texas. Like all pets from the SPCA of Texas, Biscuit has been spayed, microchipped and is current on all her necessary vaccines.
