It's normal to have apprehension and fear trying new things. But we should never let fear hold us back from our dreams. Courage isn't the absence of fear... it's pushing forward in spite of it. At the end our lesson (which involved conquering fears!), I asked this new lesson student what's one thing she learned. Her response: "to believe in myself." Mic drop.

My horse turned away. I was only wanting to catch him to treat him to a super yummy grass treat just outside of his pen. But did he come to me? No. He walked away. Instead of anger or frustration, my heart filled with compassion toward him saying “ooooh if you only knew what was in store… you would not walk away from me.” He chose his own path. And yet, I remained. I called to him. I drew closer to him slowly until he felt ready. If I had given up on my patient pursuit, he would have missed out ENTIRELY on such a sweet treat that day. And that’s when God spoke to my heart. “Jessica, how often am I pursuing you (& others) - to bless you with things you can’t even imagine - and you turn away?” I thought of all the analogies… how earlier I caught my horse to administer oral medication. How uncomfortable that syringe must have been in his mouth and the meds may have even tasted bitter. And yet I knew he needed it to help him feel better. The halter & lead rope may have felt restricting and a reminder that he’s not in control, but I knew I would let him roam once we arrived. And what about the walk over the rocky path - so much discomfort on soft soles. But I knew the greenest, tallest grasses awaited just on the other side. He just had to trust that I was with him, even in his discomfort, and that I would use those things for his good. How often God must look at us the same way. Thank you Lord that you patiently pursue us despite our avoidance or distractions through life. Thank you for leading us even when we can’t see the path. Thank you for walking beside us in times of trial and heartache - that you take those broken pieces of our lives and create a thing of beauty. Thank you for the unexpected blessings that come just from trusting you.
