BE PREPARED FOR FIREWORKS!

During the fireworks celebrations this week, here are some helpful hints for EVERY dog, not just frightened dogs. Never ASSUME that your dog will be 'just fine' ... take special care to ensure that your dog will be safe.

1. Make certain your dog is wearing a collar and ID Tag at all times! If you take him out make certain to use a leash -- yes, even dogs that 'never' run off -- keep them on a leash!

2. Keep your dogs INSIDE, preferably in an interior room that would help to muffle the sound of fireworks. Make certain there is plenty of water available, blankets, toys, and a crate if that makes the dog more comfortable. Shut the curtains and keep the lights on to help camouflage any sudden bursts of light.

3. The most soothing thing for frightened dogs is to have their guardians close by. Distract your dog with games, brushing, petting, or food, and make sure to act upbeat and calm to reinforce the idea that they do not have a reason to be afraid.

4. Drown fireworks with white noise, tv, and even “Through a Dog’s Ear” CDs, which are specially created by a sound scientist, a veterinarian, and a concert pianist to calm anxious dogs, make
the loud booms seem less frightening.

5. Melatonin is a great calming natural supplement for dogs, and you can find it at any health food store. Give your dog from 1 to 4 mg, depending on body weight, and try to give it a little ahead of the fireworks, if possible.

6. A Thundershirt might be a good solution for your dog. Based on the same principle as swaddling a baby, this snug garment has a very high success rate at calming anxious dogs. Many pet supply stores and vets now stock them.

It was spa day for Scarlett & Little Jack today. Scarlett absolutely adores her groomer Mindy at Bubbles & Bows Grooming in Central Point. As soon as we walk in, Scarlett jumps up on her and gives her so many slobber kisses. Little Jack receives lots of snuggles from Megan as she trims his nails.

Last night as Ralph & I are getting all of the goats settled in for the night, I found Crystal under the hay feeder just munching away. It helps to be only 3 months old, and small enough to get into the tiniest places. Smart little girl.🤣🤣🤣
