Socializing puppies… the Savvy Dog Society way!
••••••••••••••••••••••••••
There is so much information out there about how to “properly” socialize your new puppy, but the reality is that a lot of the advise can be dangerous.
Yes, your puppy should be exposed to new environments, situations, people, animals, etc. However, it should all be properly structured to fit your individual dogs needs.
How does one go about that?
Here’s some tips:
•Focus on Passive Observation — Allowing a young pup to *just be* in an environment and soak in everything is crucial to conditioning them to our crazy human world. We LOVE taking our training puppies out into public spaces and having them practice “place”, just so they can watch the world go by.
•Don’t force anything —
Yes, everyone and everything is going to want to say “HELLOOO” to your cute puppy. It is totally okay to control the situation and advocate for you and your dog. “I’m sorry but we’re in training” or “Do you want to help us with his/her training?” can be a great place to start. Remember, communication goes a long way.
•Start basic manners early —
We always recommend building a foundation while their young.
Here’s some things we recommend working on with your puppy:
“Wait” - pause at doorways, before coming out of their crate and receiving food or treats.
“Come” - puppies love all things that are fun, affectionate, and food. Make sure to incorporate recalling your young pup to you, and always make it FUN. Give them a reason to come to you!
•Handling - Get them used to being touched and handled by humans. It’ll make you, your groomers, and your vets lives easier. It also teaches your dog impulse control and builds a better bond and trust between you and your pup.
