Congratulations to our heartworm trivia winner carol!

🦟National Heartworm Prevention Month🦟
➡ Heartworms can take up to 6 months to test positive. This is why skipping a dose can impact your pets health. It takes 6-7 months for larva to become mature adults. Some of these prescriptions like interceptor pulse can also keep your pet protected against internal parasites such as hookworm, roundworm, whipworm and tapeworms.
➡ If left un treated heartworms can live up to 7 years inside your pet. Heartworm prevention will not kill adult heartworms that are already living inside your pet. If prevention is given when heartworms are present it can cause major health problems. This is why it is important to get yearly heartworm tests for your pet.
➡Cats can get heartworm too, even if only indoors. Heartworm disease in cats is different from heartworm disease in dogs. Heartworm disease often goes undiagnosed in cats, it’s important to understand that even immature worms could cause major damage to the heart, in the form of a condition known as heartworm associated respiratory disease (HARD). Medications that are used to treat heartworm infections in dogs cannot be used in cats. This makes prevention the only way to protect cats from heartworm disease.
❗Prevention is the best medicine. Don't forget to keep your furry friends up to date this year on Heartworm prevention. Schedule an appointment today and ask your vet what prevention is best for your pet.

🍫WHY IS CHOCOLATE TOXIC?🍫
Chocolate is made from cacao tree beans. Chocolate also contains caffeine and theobromine which are two substances that are harmful to dogs and cats

No amount of chocolate is safe for dogs or cats. Even a small amount can make a pet sick. The darker the chocolate the more poisonous it is. If your pet has gotten ahold of some chocolate their risk will depend on size and weight, type of chocolate, and the amount that they have eaten.

Give us a call right away (515)-388-4360 or seek emergency care for your pet, if you suspect your pets may have eaten chocolate.

We would like to update the community and our clients with the changes here at the clinic. You may have seen some new faces!
🐾Did you know that we now have three full time vets here at the clinic? They have been a wonderful help and amazing addition to our team.

Meet Dr. Erin🩺: Dr. Erin Goar joined our team in June of 2023. She is a recent graduate of Iowa State University. She fell in love with the area after graduation and decided to stay. Dr. Erin enjoys a variety of treating both small and large animals, but her favorites are working with cattle. She also loves cat and dog dermatology cases. Outside of work Dr. Erin loves spending time with her family. Her and her husband have 2 kids and 3 dogs. They are a very active family who love spending time outdoors and enjoy fishing and hiking. She hopes to see you soon at the clinic. She is looking forward to meeting you and working with your pets.

Meet Dr. Roth🩺: Dr. Katelyn Roth moved here in the fall with her husband, Dr. Richard Roth, who accepted a position at ISU in the agronomy department. Dr. Roth graduated from Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2020 and has practiced a variety of large and small animal medicine in both Indiana and Georgia. While she loves treating all creatures large and small, her favorites are sheep and goats. Dr. Roth also enjoys surgery and hopes to continue to strengthen these skills through her opportunities at our clinic. When not giving back to her community through vet med, she loves spending time with her husband, traveling, exploring nature, and crafting. She also enjoys taking walks with their Australian shepherd to enjoy the great outdoors. Dr. Roth and her husband are beyond excited to welcome their first child into their family in February and begin this next chapter putting down roots in Iowa.
🐾Lastly we are very excited to announce that we were voted the Best of Story County Veterinary Clinic of 2023. We could not have done it with out our wonderful clients and the help of our staff. We are excepting new clients and look forward to seeing you. Call us today set up an appointment!

Halloween is a week away!
Your pets will have even many opportunities to eat foods they shouldn't! Here is a quick reminder that Halloween candies and treats can be toxic to pets. Ensure they don't have access to the candy bowl and remind guest not to share their treats with your furry friend! Watch out for the wrappers too: there crinkly noise can appeal to pets, and can present a choking hazard!
