Hi all, the Georgia's Rome Tourism office is canceling the video shoot at the dog park that was originally scheduled for 10:30 today. The grounds are too wet and we don’t want to mess up all the hard work of Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation and their sod installation! We will reschedule for a dry, sunny morning!

Welcome to your dog park!

Our new dog park at Ridgeferry Park is a testament to the importance of citizen involvement in government, particularly local government. This park was years in the making until it finally gained enough public support to be included as a SPLOST project. The public then rallied behind the idea again from the voting booths. The idea of a dog park was an understandably tough sell in an environment like Rome and Floyd County because we have many residences with relatively large lots, enough space for a dog to run in a fenced-in backyard. My wife and I are a perfect example because we have two dogs and almost a half-acre fenced in our backyard. The flaw in this theory that backyards are good enough is that I can routinely look out back and see our dogs snoozing within 10 minutes of going outside, instead of running around using their abundant space. Dogs are pack animals and social creatures, from an early age they need to be stimulated and socialized through interacting with other dogs and people.

Many people also fail to realize that the dog park is a catalyst for change. We have made great strides to promote downtown living in the form of lofts, townhouses, etc. We are striving to promote the “Between the Rivers” District (Broad Street) and the River District. Additional residents equal additional customers for area businesses. These potential residents are attracted to these areas by the amenities they offer, including walkable access to eating, entertainment, and recreation, which includes recreational opportunities for Fido. Vibrant cities are increasingly becoming dog-friendly and dog parks allow for an additional opportunity for dogs and their humans to meet, build relationships and feel a sense of community. Our downtown parks and green spaces are community backyards so they should also include play space for pups.

We hope you use the space, we hope you love it and we hope you will let us know if you have ideas to make it even better. This dog park is not only a social spot for people and pooches, but an investment in the continued growth of our community.

Hello to all our dog park friends! We had so much at Pup-a-Palooza earlier this year, we invite you to join us for Yappy Hour on Tuesday, November 12, 4-6 PM at the Rome Dog Park located in Ridge Ferry Park (Shoals Entrance)

The Rome-Floyd Planning Department would like to thank everyone that made Pup-A-Palooza a tremendous success. This was a “pet project” (pun intended) that we were under no obligation to do, but as an office of animal lovers we chose to take on the additional work associated with organizing and promoting such an event.

Jeff Mitchell of PAWS and Kristi Kent of the Tourism Office partnered with us. We had zero budget but luckily, the community rallied around the idea and donated everything from the raffle-prize gift baskets to the micro-chipping clinic. We especially need to thank the Rome-Floyd Humane Society, Mount Berry Animal Hospital, Petsense, Georgia Dog Gym, TRED, the Rome-Floyd E.C.O. Center, Diggin’ it Dogs, Do Good Boutique, Tractor Supply and Bartow Animal Hospital for donating to our raffle prize baskets. Kona Ice and The Creamery also braved the heat to sell cold treats.

This event would not have been possible without the wonderful ladies of Georgia’s Rome Office of Tourism, Rome and Floyd County Public Works, Rome/Floyd Parks and Recreation Department and our local government management teams and commissioners. The Rome Tennis Center even donated 100 old tennis balls for the dogs to play with.

The camping chairs and kiddie pools were borrowed from our relatives, and we each spent our own money to add items to raffle prize baskets and stuff our pockets with dog treats and p**p bags to give out and dog toys to place in the two fields. Lastly, we also want to thank our significant others, who volunteered their time and energy to hang out in the blazing heat.

We had faith that the weather would hold out and the community would rally around the idea and we couldn’t be more excited that they rose to the occasion. We estimate that 115 dogs attended and each of them typically had two people with them. There were dogs of all breeds, ages, colors and sizes and they all played together wonderfully without a single incident. The people who came were even kind enough to donate enough bags of dog food to fill up one of PAWS’ trucks. Romans never cease to amaze with their generosity, their love of their dogs and their eagerness to come out for community events.
