This sweet, resilient girl is a 3-year-old domestic short-hair who came from a difficult hoarding situation. Despite her rough start, Ezra is learning to trust again and is so ready to find her forever home! She’s got a heart full of love to give and is looking for a patient family who can help her feel safe and comfortable in her new life. 💕

Sadly, hoarding situations stem from a deep illness that affects many people. It’s important to remember that those who hoard often struggle with mental health challenges and are in need of support and care. 📢Calling All School Age Readers!

We will be holding our BOOK BUDDIES READING PROGRAM again over the February school break! 📕📚

Book Buddies is a unique opportunity for school-aged children to practice their reading skills by reading to adoptable cats. This initiative combines education, compassion, and therapy, offering children the chance to boost their confidence as readers while simultaneously providing comfort and companionship to shelter cats. 📖😻

The Humane Society of Rome held the program during last year’s school break and are excited to hold it again! We love seeing the kids reading to the shelter cats!💟 🐈‍⬛

Running from Tuesday, February 18th through Saturday, February 22nd, the program encourages children of all reading levels to visit the shelter and read aloud to the cats in our care. Whether they are practicing their fluency, tackling new books, or simply enjoying the joy of storytelling, young readers can help calm the shelter cats, many of whom suffer from anxiety in the shelter environment.

The program is designed to support children who may feel nervous or anxious about reading aloud in a traditional classroom setting.
By reading to a patient, non-judgmental listener—one of the shelter’s friendly felines—children can build confidence in a comfortable, encouraging space.

The program will take place from February 18-February 22 with scheduled time slots available in the mornings and afternoons.

On Saturday, February 22nd, the final day of the program, the shelter will host “Puppy Love” a special program closing day where the readers will have the opportunity to read to the shelter’s eight 12-week-old puppies! 💖🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶💖

All participants will receive a Book Buddies reading log and a Humane Society of Rome Book Buddies t-shirt.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to register their children in advance by calling the Humane Society of Rome at 315.336.7070, as spots are limited.

• Skilled Work: Rhaenyra would really thrive in an environment with agility work and/or competition obedience from novice to utility.

• Fetching: No tennis ball is safe from this dog’s ultra-quick reflexes. 10/10 would recommend for any fetch-related positions. 🎾

LEONA 🐶💖

Leona’s story is especially heartwarming, and our hearts are full to see her find a new home with a loving family. When Leona came to the Humane Society of Rome, she was very anxious about most things, including people.

When she was surrendered, we immediately recognized that Leona’s care would require an extra level of patience and understanding, and a lot of love to help her overcome her past experiences. Our shelter manager and kennel staff implemented a structured plan to help Leona adjust to her new surroundings and encourage her to trust people again. ❣️❣️

Leona was given a safe space, without forcing her to interact, but instead allowing her to approach only when she was ready. Her days were filled with positive reinforcement and rewards of treats and praise. All interactions with Leona were purposeful and only gentle body language was used, without loud noises or sudden movements.🥰

Eventually, our wonderful volunteers would spend time simply sitting with Leona and talking to her using a calm voice. 👏

All this enrichment made a huge difference in helping Leona feel safe and loved enough to start trusting people again. 💗💗

Leona’s adoptive family came to the shelter for weeks, spending quiet time with her each day. They were truly the perfect match for Leona, giving her the time she needed to feel comfortable with them and build a bond. 🐶💖
