🐾💙This is adorable and gentle Reiji who is available for adoption!! He was picked up from boarding and on his way to the ranch. He is just about as sweet and kind as you can imagine. He is a little timid with new experiences but leans on you in trust to lead him through. He was found as a stray and this is common at first with these pups who were on their own. Keiji Is not skittish at all and calm, walking well on leash and very gentle. ♥️ He LOVES people and really wants to please and learn from you. He will bond deeply with his owner and be your very closest friend. He isn’t in love with new dogs at first but he was found with another dog so can probably adjust with a friendly companion. He is house trained and really just a doll. Young, maybe 2 years old, and a joy to have around!!

💜🐾Hazel is a darling young female Akita available for adoption!! She is new to the ranch and still getting her bearings but is just an adorable, sweet little girl. She is very shy but gentle and flutters around you wanting to get to know but takes a little time to trust. She would do well with a calm, quiet home where she can flourish with her family. She is opening up everyday and is like a little butterfly saying hi. Only about a year old, she would be an adoring best friend for life!!

💙🐾Cody is now available for adoption!!! He is just the sweetest young male akita!! Today he was pulled from boarding and taken to the Akita Ranch so he can find his forever home!! He is very young, maybe about a year old and just a joy to be around. He is a boisterous puppy but also loves to settle down and snuggle with his person. He has the kindest little heart and we can’t wait for him to feel safe and loved forever!! ♥️

♥️A Passion for Paws Rescue, Inc. mourns the passing of our loving founder Cheryl Weatherford.
Cheryl passed away peacefully October 16, 2024, after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. We will miss her dearly but especially her humor, kindness, tenacity and deep devotion for the innocent Akita’s she never stopped fighting for. Our greatest desire is to continue Cheryl’s legacy of compassion for the breed we love. With peace in our hearts, we know Cheryl is now celebrating with so many of our special pups that have passed over the rainbow bridge.🐾

💜 Bonnie is a gorgeous and sweet young girl Akita that is ready for adoption!! 🌸 She arrived as part of a bonded pair but has since grown apart from her buddy Clyde. They still enjoy playing together but don’t need to be together all the time. So she does get along with other dogs but is also happy as the only princess!! She is a darling young girl that loves going for walks, playing in the play yard and taking naps by your side.

♥️We solely rely on your donations to continue saving lives and providing for the abandoned pups in our care!! Our monthly donor program is a great way to help us know we can pay the bills for the pups and be able to rescue additional orphans. It is also what is allowing for us to pay for pups to be in boarding. When we are at max capacity we then can rescue Akitas that are on the euthanasia list at the shelter and place them in boarding until we have room at the ranch. 💙🐾Located in Sulphur Springs Texas, Apollo needs our help finding a home!!!🚨

We are in Sulphur Springs, Texas and trying to find a good home for Apollo. He’s an 8 year old German Sheppard Akita that has been raised inside around kids/toddlers and is potty trained and trained to not bark. 💙Enzo is an amazing, loving, Akita male available for adoption!! 🐾 He arrived at our ranch in horrible condition due to neglect. Terribly thin, with skin sores and shaky in his walk. Well this teddy bear is healed up and a big happy goof!!🐻He is pretty much the floppy Akita boy that wants to sit in your lap and be your best friend! He loves being in a home, comfy and cozy, going for walks, playing with toys, eating yummy food and to be next to you for love and scratches!! 🐾Rollie, formerly known as Ronaldo is an XL male Akita looking for his forever home!! Like most Akitas, he can be aloof with strangers and doesn’t appreciate them being too invasive of his personal space but falls in love once he sees you respect his boundaries. He is treat motivated and loves to play….then mostly relax!!🤣Rollie is a quiet boy that enjoys life. He really is low maintenance and goes about his day in calm confidence. He would do well as an only dog in a breed savvy home that loves and cherishes him♥️

⭐️🐾Lightning is a gentle, calm Akita male that is ready for his forever home!! He is very sweet and affectionate. He walks excellent on leash, does well indoors, love his grooming, and is as loyal as they come. Lightning is quiet and can be a little shy at first but warms up quickly. He is just wonderful and would do best as an only boy. Lightning arrived at the ranch years ago neglected and scared. With love he was able to open up and now deserves to be someone’s special boy in his own home♥️

Our Story

A Passion For Paws Rescue, Inc. is a 501c3 non-profit dog rescue organization specializing in Akitas and other large-breed dogs.

It’s not hard to make decisions when you know what your values are. A Passion For Paws Rescue, Inc. was founded in 2004 by Cheryl Weatherford to honor the memory of her son Paxton David Weatherford who passed away from a rare form of cancer after only a 9 day battle. Paxton loved animals, and had brought Cheryl her first Akita; an extra large, white male named Zeus who had survived a terrible fire at a San Diego shelter that killed 200 dogs. Zeus had the appearance of a polar bear, temperament of a lamb, and was wise beyond his years fostering in Cheryl, an undying love for Akitas and dogs in need.

Since our beginning, we have saved the lives of over 2,000 Akitas and other large-breed dogs who don’t stand a chance in overcrowded shelters and are often destroyed right away. In 2010, we established the #AkitaRanch facility to provide for the temporary housing and care of dogs in need. We have the capacity for 25 dogs at a time, and when space is unavailable, dogs are placed in foster care. We are the only Akita rescue organization in the southwestern United States that actively takes in dogs on a weekly, if not daily basis.

We are 100% all-volunteer charity organization that operates entirely on donations. The average stay is 140 days per dog, where we provide medical care, spay/neuter/microchip and rehabilitate each dog to be ready for their forever home. We do not turn away dogs based on sickness, injury, age, or attitude, and strive to make 2nd hand dogs first class family members.
