2. Fill out paperwork and complete payment($70 per animal)
3. Drop you animal off here at the shelter on your assigned date/time
4. Your animal will then be transported to nuzzles to be fixed and vaccinated
5. Your animal will be brought back to the shelter the same day for you to pick up

Itchy dog?!?🐾 We are still frequently seeing dogs with lice. It is out there in the community. Please check your pups for this. They may be hard to see, especially if your pup has a lot of hair, or dark hair. We are now offering a monthly spot treatment that covers fleas, ticks and lice for $15 per pup. Just yesterday we had one of our local dogs test positive for heart worm disease—the dog has never left the Basin.
Heartworm disease, transmitted via mosquito bites, can lead to severe health issues, including heart failure and lung disease, and can be fatal if untreated. The disease often advances undetected until serious symptoms appear. In this case the pup would have been exposed last year, when mosquitoes were still out and about. Treatment for heartworm disease is risky and strenuous for the pet.
This local case underlines the necessity of proactive heartworm prevention, which includes using preventive medications year-round, regular testing, and reducing mosquito exposure.

Let’s talk kennel cough…

This is a general term that encompasses an illness, generally viral, that inflames the windpipe and lungs and causes a cough. The sound and severity of the cough depends on the virus and dogs overall immune health. The Bordetella vaccine can help with immunity to a few of the strains, but not all. We do strongly encourage the Bordetella vaccine every 6 months for those dogs that have regular interaction with other dogs, such as daycare.

These viruses are airborne and are spread through coughing/sneezing. They can also be spread through contact of infected surfaces, though viruses quickly lose their ability to cause infection this way. There is an incubation period of anywhere from 2-14 days between exposure and when your dog may start showing symptoms, the tricky part is, they can still be contagious to other dogs during this stage, even without noticeable symptoms.

The majority of cases don’t require medical intervention, just as a human cold, but in some cases it can lead to something serious like pneumonia. Signs to watch for that may indicate antibiotics are needed include: loss of appetite, lethargy, change in breathing, green nasal discharge and fever.

With that being said… we want you to know that, even though we can’t eliminate all cases, we do absolutely everything we can to prevent any spread once a case has been discovered. We lease two separate facilities so that we can have a place to quarantine dogs under these circumstances. As soon as we are made aware of a dog currently or recently at our facility showing symptoms, we immediately quarantine any other potentially exposed dogs by transporting them to our Neola facility. We always communicate with the owners when this is the case. We then thoroughly sanitize the Roosevelt facility before any new incoming dogs are dropped off.

There are a few ways that you can help us out immensely in this regard. First, please make us aware of any current or recent symptoms you’ve seen in your dog before dropping off. Also, it would be helpful to know if your dog has been around any other unknown dogs such as a visit to the vet or dog park recently. And lastly, please please let us know as soon as you notice symptoms in your dog after getting them home. This will allow us to take precautions as early as possible to prevent further spread.
