Nymeria, a sweet 1st-time mama, welcomed eight adorable new puppies this week, just in time for Valentine’s Day! 💕

On Wednesday, she successfully gave birth to six puppies at home without any issues. However, the last two had other plans. When Nymeria began to show signs of distress, her owner quickly packed her and her puppies up and brought them to us.

Upon arrival, Nymeria received a comprehensive examination from Dr. Emily Eckart, which included an X-ray and an ultrasound to check the puppies' heartbeats. The timing was critical for both the puppies' and Nymeria's well-being, guiding our treatment approach.

To help stimulate contractions and assist the puppies in moving into the birthing canal, Nymeria was given an injection of oxytocin. If her body and the puppies didn’t respond, an emergency C-section would have been necessary. Each minute felt like an eternity, but thankfully, with the skill of Dr. Emily and Dr. Jessica Hodes, both puppies were safely delivered without the need for surgery.

Nymeria and her puppies are now doing wonderfully and are happily bonding at home. We hope everyone finds something as precious as one of Nymeria's little ones to cherish as a Valentine because we can't get enough of them!

Happy Valentines Day from HVHC 💜

The first call of 2025 brought both excitement and a touch of medical magic at Hodes Veterinary Health Center. Hermione, a dedicated mother-to-be, had been laboring at home without success. Concerned for her well-being, her owners reached out to the after-hours line, leading to the decision for Hermione to come in for a thorough examination.

Upon arrival, Dr. Tanner and Nurse Natalie assessed Hermione's condition and quickly determined that a cesarean section, commonly known as a C-section, was necessary to ensure the safety of both Hermione and her unborn kids. The procedure went smoothly, and soon, Hermione became the proud mother of a healthy baby boy and a baby girl. Both little ones thrived during and after the procedure, thanks to the attentive care provided by Dr. Tanner and Nurse Natalie.

We appreciate our clients' understanding during our closed hours, but we want to reassure everyone that we remain committed to assisting with any animal needs and emergencies. After all, we know that sometimes, life doesn't adhere to a schedule, and we're here to help when it matters most.

As colder weather sets in, many people turn to poisons, sprays, and traps to keep unwanted pests out of their homes. It’s crucial to remember that while these products can be effective for rodents and insects, they can also pose serious risks to our pets. Ingesting these substances can lead to severe health emergencies for dogs, cats, and other animals.

If you suspect your pet has come into contact with or ingested any toxic substances, please seek help immediately. Our veterinary team is always available to assist you, as timely intervention is essential for ensuring your pet’s safety and well-being. Remember, it’s better to act quickly than to wait and see if your pet is okay. Your furry friends rely on you to keep them safe, so please exercise caution when using pest control methods in your home.

Additionally, if you hire a pest control company, be sure to ask about the products they use and where they will be applied around your home. This knowledge not only helps you maintain a safe environment for both your pets and your family, but it also enables us to provide swift and effective treatment if your pet accidentally ingests any of these products. Your vigilance can make a significant difference in protecting your loved ones from potential harm.

Say hello to Henry! The 3-year-old King Charles Cavalier, whose radiograph we posted yesterday for you all to see and guess.

Henry had come in for an exam to schedule his neuter with Dr. Jackson, and the owners noted that they felt his breathing was different. Because of his breed, they just wanted to double-check that his heart wasn’t enlarged and causing issues.

You can never be too careful, which is another reason we like to do exams before surgery days. Lucky for Henry, it showed something that shouldn’t have been there, especially since Henry was not showing any classic signs of a foreign body, like not eating or vomiting. We are happy Henry is doing fantastic after surgery and has recovered well.

Now, you all want to know the answer: What was inside Henry? We had lots of fun and interesting answers, some correct.

Henry ingested hair ties! Dr. Jackson and his team removed over 75 hair ties from Henry's stomach!! Henry can now breathe easy and hopefully stick to his snacks from here on out.
