Pippin enjoyed a new treat to keep him occupied during the beginning of our lesson.

Treats that are larger and take a little while to get through are great treats to have on hand for redirection. Pippin gets very excited when people come to his home. This treat helped him settle down quickly so we could get right to training.

I think all the work I put into socialization and training with Jonah early on has paid off. Taking a snooze during a Marching Band performance.

These 2 pups are working with me on leash manners, socialization and exposure. We found something noisey and let them take it in and explore while also making it a positive experience with treats. They are both looking for homes! If you are interested in some sweet and very resilient puppies, let me know so I can get you in contact with their breeder.

Some things you may want to know in preparation for your CGC test:

There is no age requirement to take your CGC test, however I much prefer a dog to be over the age of 1. Some dogs go through a rough "teenage" phase, and it might even be better to wait until after 2 years old in some cases.

A dog with signs of aggression will be dismissed from the test. Including growling, barking, snapping at either person or dog.

All test items will be on leash (no retractables), and on a fabric or leather collar (including slip or Martingale) or harness (non restricting).

If your dog goes potty during the test, you will be dismissed and can retake the test at a later date.

No food or toys can be used in the CGC test. I highly encourage practicing with and without food rewards. Praise is always good!

The CGC test is not a certification for a service dog. In the US, a service dog is a dog specifically trained to assist someone with a disability. This requires a dog to be task trained and well behaved in public (which the CGC helps with). There is no certification or registration for service dogs.

The last, and sometimes most difficult test item of the CGC test, is supervised separation.

I will take your dogs leash, and will have you walk out of sight of your dog for 3 minutes.

What I'm looking for is a dog that isn't overly worried about leaving your side. Excessive whining or barking isn't allowed. Dog is not expected to be in a stay the whole time, and can move around as long as they aren't tugging on the leash.

Test item 8, reaction to another dog, is done with one of my Demo dogs. I will have you put your dog into a sit, will approach with my dog next to me on the side away from you and your dog. I will stop about 10 feet away from you and say something like "what a cute dog you have!" Then we will both walk off in opposite directions.

Casual intrest in the other dog is acceptable, I am just looking for your dog to not lunge, bark, growl, or shy away from the other dog.

CGC test points 6 and 7 are tested one after the other. This includes sit, down, stay, and come.

I will first ask you to sit and down your dog. You can then ask them to stay in whichever position you prefer while you walk to the end and back of a 20ft long line, returning immediately to your dog to praise and release from their stay.

I will then ask you to sit or down your dog, and then walk halfway the length of the line and call your dog to you.

What I'm looking for is a dog that is willing to sit and down on cue with 1 or 2 reminders if needed. The dog should be able to hold a brief stay cue, and not get up before you return to your dog. When you call your dog to you, the dog should go straight to you, not wandering off.

Found this article and study interesting. I'm choosing to keep Jonah intact as long as neutering isn't medically necessary. But I realize not every lifestyle bends towards the extra management needed for intact animals. Alternative procedures are becoming more available (vasectomy and o***y sparing spay), and I would highly encourage searching out a vet that is willing to provide a sterilization procedure that leaves the dog hormonally intact. There are also implants you can use to chemically sterilize to see how a full neuter or spay would effect your pet before a permanent procedure is done.

Please reach out if you have any questions, or want to learn more.

Studying how spay/neuter and the loss of gonadal hormones may produce these adverse health effects will help veterinarians and dog owners make more informed and personalized decisions regarding if or when to spay/neuter a dog. Understanding the mechanisms of disease production may also provide oppor...
