December is National Cat Lovers’ month! This is a great month to treat your furry feline friend with the royal attention they deserve! Cats can be independent, yet incredibly social. They can be lazy, but get the zoomies. The truth is that we don’t really understand these beautiful creatures, but we love them anyway! As much as we love cats and want more of them, cat overpopulation remains a very large issue - be sure to spay and neuter your cats! You can also donate to TNR (trap, neuter, release) programs to help decrease cat overpopulation.

Did you know pets can also have diabetes? This happens when the pet's body does not produce or utilize insulin correctly, which prevents them from converting food to energy. This can lead to several other health issues if left untreated. However, with the help of a veterinarian, diabetes can be managed and these pets can live long and happy lives. In honor of Pet Diabetes Month, we’d like to raise awareness for this condition. According to the AVMA, the hallmark signs of diabetes are polyuria (excessive urination) and polydipsia (excessive thirst), weight loss, decreased or increased appetite, cloudy eyes, and or chronic or recurring infections. By keeping up with routine examinations and clear communication with your veterinarian, diabetes can be caught early and treatment can begin right away to help your pet feel better!

Happy Thanksgiving! All of us here at Vet Partners would like to express how thankful we are for the trust you put in us when it comes to your pets' health. We love and care for your pets as if they are our own and appreciate all you do for them to keep them safe, happy, and healthy. We would also like to mention that not all food that will be out on your tables will be safe for your pet to eat. A couple small pieces of skinless, cooked turkey meat can be okay for your pet, but avoid bones, raw meat, and seasonings. Everything else, aside from plain, raw veggies, should be kept away from your pet. If you are hosting this year, please allow your pet to have access to a quiet room where guests will not bother them. It can be stressful having a full house and your pet will need somewhere to be if they are overwhelmed!

We all get a little older every year, but many times our pets do not show the same signs of aging that we do. This month is National Senior Pet month, so we would like to highlight some of the changes our pets undergo as they gradually become seniors. As they age, their health might begin to deteriorate. More frequent vet visits are recommended to monitor any chronic issues your pet might have or simply to check for new conditions that might arise. It’s important to discuss with your veterinarian what signs to watch for as your pet’s mental and physical health begins to deteriorate and how to assess their quality of life. Every pet is different, so each case is unique to your pet and you as their owner. All of that being said, there are very large numbers of senior pets in shelters and rescues that are in need of a home. Many think these pets were surrendered due to medical or behavioral issues, but this is not always the case. Older pets may become orphaned as their older owners move or pass away. Just because they are a little bit older doesn’t mean they have any less love to give. If you are able, consider celebrating this month and honoring senior pets by welcoming one into your home.

Today is National Cat Day! Did you know that cats have over ten times as many vocal sounds as dogs do? That their whiskers are usually about the same width as their bodies and allow them to ‘feel’ the world around them? The headbutting that cats sometimes do is called ‘bunting’ and they use this to mark you as their territory and show that they love you! Some of our team members believe that dog people are just cat people that haven’t met their cat. National Cat Day is supposed to help raise awareness for the number of cats that need to be adopted, so take a minute and think about how you can help. Maybe you can adopt, maybe you can foster. If you can’t do that, consider donating or volunteering at a local shelter to help out.

The month of October is dedicated to encouraging safe ways to handle and care for animals, both the ones in our homes, the ones in our backyard, the ones that live across the world, and the ones that help bring food to our table. This month is National Animal Safety and Prevention Month. While we hope these practices are taking place every day of the year, this month is especially dedicated to raise awareness. In your own home, be sure any toxins are out of reach of your pet. Make sure your pet is able to be identified if they get outside and that you are able to be reached. Keep up with routine veterinary visits so our doctors can make sure your fur-babies are in the best condition they can be.

While veterinary technicians and assistants love all recognized holidays throughout the year, this week might be their favorite because it’s National Veterinary Technician Week! This is a week for those veterinary nurses who work long, unforgiving days filled with every emotion possible. Everything your human nurse does, our vet techs and assistants do - except their patients can’t talk to them or understand what’s going on! Our techs get scratched, bitten, bled on, peed on, pooped on, puked on, and more, but they still come back every day because your pet means more to them. We love our team and hope you love them too! Thank you to all that they do - we can never put into words how much appreciation we have for you.

Happy World Mental Health Day! We should all take a moment to take a deep breath and some time to ourselves today. Today is a day to bring attention to mental illness and how it impacts our life in every aspect - from work, to family, to friendships, and more. Everyone experiences different types and levels of stress, and those that suffer from mental health conditions may have more difficulty managing these stresses. Take a few minutes for yourself today (and maybe every day) to give yourself a pat on the back for all you do.

We all know black cats are incorrectly associated with bad luck, but did you know that black dogs experience the same misconception? In shelters and rescues, there’s something called “Black Dog Syndrome”, which essentially means that a dog with a darker coat is less likely to be adopted. This is likely because they blend into the shadows or because their facial expressions are more difficult to read, making it harder to sense their personality. Because of this Black Dog Syndrome, today is National Black Dog Day - a day to remind everyone that black dogs wag their tails the same as those with lighter coats and can bring us just as much joy!

Here at Vet Partners in Apple Valley, we want to show appreciation to our clients and the various industries they work in. For the month of October, we would like to celebrate first responders. First responders are those who put their lives on the line when they punch in for work, they are the ones who serve our community on a daily basis, and they are the ones who are frequently not acknowledged for their hard work due to the emergency circumstances they work in. To show our appreciation for these hard workers, we would like to offer 10% off of all services for the month of October. If you bring in your pet to see us this month, let us know you are a first responder and we will give you a discount. Thank you for all that you do!

Did you know that over 99% of human rabies cases come from dog bites? What about the fact that rabies is present on every continent and that over 60,000 people die from rabies every year? All of this is precisely why today is World Rabies Day - a day to educate how rabies can be eradicated. Rabies cannot be treated, but it can be prevented. Be sure your pet is up to date on their rabies vaccine, as this is the first step to removing this fatal disease from the world!
