🌳🐾 Great Outdoors Month is here! 🌞
Whether you're hitting the trails or enjoying your backyard, here are some tips to keep your pets safe and happy:
Hydration is Key: Always carry water and a bowl for your pet.
Paw Protection: Hot pavement can burn paws. Stick to grassy areas or use paw protectors.
Tick Check: After outdoor adventures, check your pet for ticks and use preventative treatments.
Enjoy the great outdoors with your furry friends safely! 🐶🐱 #GreatOutdoorsMonth #PetSafety
Kitten being bottle fed at hospital
Kitten Season is still upon us, and there is nothing cuter than a bottle baby! Look at those wiggly ears 😻 This time of year, we tend to receive many neonates and injured kittens that are found by local Good Samaritans. Sometimes, these kittens are too young to survive on their own without their mom or have been abandoned. People often want to help them but are unsure what to do. Though we are not an intake center for stray animals, we are able to scan for a microchip and help direct the Good Samaritans to the right jurisdiction if they are not from Roseville!
We're grateful for our incredible community that is always looking out for the local animals around us. If you have found a stray animal and are unsure of what to do, it is always best to contact your local animal control so they can direct you further.
What to do if your mental health is causing you struggles at work…talk to someone! 🗣️ It’s common to feel anxious or down occasionally, but if you’re experiencing mental difficulties regularly, it’s important to reach out for help. It can be difficult to talk openly with someone about your life, however, it’s critical to keep in mind that those who care about you want to help.
In honor of #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth, Veterinary Social Worker at our sister hospital in California, Alisha, is here to provide you with a few tips on how to guide the conversation about your mental health with your manager, supervisor, or fellow team member.
Remember: the bravest thing you can do is ask for help. 💚
To all our veterinarians, specialists, relief doctors, per diems, and residents – Happy World Veterinary Day! 🏥🐾 Sometimes this profession is anal glands, ear infections, and giving the pet insurance talk. But it’s also seeing your feline lymphoma patient go into remission, helping a spaniel with cataracts see again, that rewarding moment of extracting a tennis ball via endoscopy, and reuniting a dog with his owners after 6 nights in the ICU.
To all veterinarians today and every day, thank you for making the world a better place. 💚
“Why is the wait so long, it seems so quiet?” – this is something we hear a lot! 🏥🐾 Even when the front lobby is empty & there are no cars in the parking lot, “out back” in treatment can look very different. Between a crashing cat who isn’t breathing, a hit-by-car case requiring multiple team members, and hospitalized pets occupying every ICU kennel, our team behind those doors is determinedly saving lives.
We know waiting in the ER with your pet can be stressful, but rest assured we are working hard to get to you.
Something’s wriggling in this dog’s blood sample! 🔬🩸 Meet “microfilariae,” the larvae of the dreaded female heartworm. After roughly 6-7 months, these larvae will mature into adult heartworms, grow up to 14 inches long (😳), and reproduce more offspring. Left untreated, this dog could end up with hundreds of them in his body causing long-term damage to the lungs, heart, and arteries and even sudden death. Since it was caught, he will undergo treatment which involves several months of medications, exercise restrictions, and hospitalization days.
Luckily, this is preventable! 🥳 Keep your dog on monthly heartworm preventative all year round – put it in your calendar, and don’t miss/skip a dose. And if you’re rescuing a dog (especially from southern states like Tennessee, Arkansas, & Mississippi), talk to your veterinarian about re-testing them for heartworm. #NationalHeartwormAwarenessMonth #heartworm
Check it out! 🧬🐾 Our Hospital Director, Nicole, recently had a DNA test done through Embark Vet on her pup that she rescued when he was a young puppy. While waiting on the results, we had a fun time making our own guesses on what the results were going to be. Close enough, right? 🤣
These type of genetic test kits can tell you more than just your dog’s breed results! Learn more here: https://www.ethosvet.com/blog-post/5-things-a-dog-dna-test-can-tell-you-about-your-dog/
What makes you happy? 😄 We asked our veterinary staff members across the country and we're spreading some happiness for #InternationalDayOfHappiness! From dogs to snacks to rubber ducks, here's what makes us happy.
This video shows microfilaria seen in a blood slide. 🔍🩸
Microfilariae are the infective larvae of the female heartworm, which are spread via an infected mosquito after feeding/biting a dog. After roughly 6-7 months, the larvae can mature into adult heartworms which then mate and release larvae into the bloodstream. Microfilaria seen on a blood smear is indicative that adult heartworms are present.

Let’s walk the dog! 🦮🚶♀️ Those magic words “do you want to go for a walk?” are more important than you may think. Just 30 minutes of walking every day can increase cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones, reduce excess body fat, and improve mental health for BOTH you and your dog! Be healthy together – you and your dog need each other! #NationalWalkingTheDogDay
You can always count on puppies to warm your heart, especially when they have a wiggly butt! 💚 We know that visiting our hospital can be scary for some dogs, being a new environment for most. That’s why our team members make sure to provide some extra love & support to those who may need it.
Because we are an Emergency only hospital and sometimes see sick patients, it's also super important we take extra precautions with the youngsters to keep them safe from infectious diseases, such as Parvo. For puppies that are not fully vaccinated yet, we ensure they’re carried through our hospital, which is a great excuse for technicians to cuddle and give them more positive praise! Somehow, RVT Heather always ends up with a puppy in her arms. She's just doing her job! 😉
“A port in a storm”. 💉 Placing an intravenous catheter is one of the first steps in urgent and emergent care. It allows us to safely & cleanly treat our patients. The catheter allows us to draw blood, administer fluids, and medications through one port. The process for veterinary catheter placement looks a bit different from a human. Take a peek at how we do this for our canine patients, demonstrated by one of our sister hospitals in MA!
Fun fact: placing your first catheter as a veterinary professional is a big achievement in developing clinical skills. It's one of those celebrated milestones!
What a year it has been! 🎉
As you can see, we’ve had some pretty great patients this year! Our Ethos team members and all in the veterinary community have been dedicated to keeping pets happy and healthy all year long. Cheers to 2023 and another year of being there for pets who need us. 💚
The scariest thing we can think of? Puppy teeth! 🐶🦈

#WednesdayWisdom did you know that a Bambino cat is a mix between the Sphynx cat and munchkin breed?! They have a hairless appearance with short legs and long bodies! 🐱
Brother and sister Bambino duo, Mitsu & Mijikai, were recently seen by our team but on different occasions! Mitsu presented to us first due to congestion and she was treated for an upper respiratory infection. After treated, she headed back home with her brother. But due to the infectious nature of URI's, Mijikai (her brother) began to show similar symptoms. He came to see us about a week later and received treatment for a URI just like his sister. While they were in our care, we can assure you that both these sweethearts got lots of love and attention! Mijikai showed us one of his special tricks where he wags his tail like a dog in excitement when his owner gives him scratches! Our team was glad to be there for this family. 💚
Today is a special day 🥳 It is the Universal Birthday for Shelter Dogs, better known as #DOGust! "Treat" your pup to these super easy & quick refreshing 1-ingredient Pumpkin Pops!

Just 1 can pure Pumpkin 🎃
Be careful not to purchase pumpkin pie filling in a can as it's full of sugar. You can also mix in yogurt, peanut butter, or banana for an additional spin on this treat!
Check out our quick recipe video below, and a big happy birthday to all our amazing shelter pups! 💚
This is adorable French Bulldog is in need of a forever home! Keep reading for her story. 💚
This Frenchie was brought into our care after a good Samaritan found her on the side of the road covered in wounds and unable to use her back legs. She also appeared to have had previous litters of puppies. Unfortunately, due to her injuries, she is paralyzed in her back end.
Despite the situation, this little one had everyone falling in love the moment she arrived with her sweet demeanor and loving personality. One of our relief veterinarians is an avid Frenchie lover and wanted to give this baby a chance. The veterinarian offered to foster her and provide the medical care she needs, in hopes to find an experienced forever family who can cater for her needs.
🚨 Important things to note if you’re interested in this sweet girl:
- She will most likely be paralyzed in the rear end for the rest of her life.
- She could potentially need a wheelchair and/or assistance getting around.
- She is extremely sweet and eats like a champ!
- She has a bright spirit and gets really excited to get attention.
- She will happily wait for cuddles and be your forever cuddle buddy.
This would be a big commitment, but one you won’t regret! Please contact [email protected] for questions or if you’re interested in being her forever home.
Dr. MacKie DVM DACVIM (Cardiology) has a big heart, especially for our hospital mascot Brown cat! 😸
Dr. MacKie is a mobile cardiologist who we work with often for patients who may need a cardiac ultrasound/echocardiogram. Dr. MacKie helped to implement the use of the Amplatz Canine Ductal Occluder for non-invasive treatment of congenital heart disease and assisted in prospective research on pulmonary hypertension and cardiac biomarkers. His clinical interests include echocardiography and electrocardiography (ECG), pulmonary hypertension in dogs, syncope (fainting) associated with heart disease and arrhythmia, congenital heart disease, and congestive heart failure (CHF).
From all the time he spends at our hospital, he has formed quite a bond with our chunky, sassy, sweet girl Brown cat! We're thankful for the both of them!
This one is for all of our husky lovers out there! Our team at our sister hospital in Illinois had no problem letting Balto run the conversation 😂 How do your pets get your attention? (husky or not!)
