Our annual Easter PSA from The Professor:

Meow!

With Easter right around the corner, I want mew to know that Easter Lilies, along with all plants from the Lilium family, are highly toxic to your feline friends, and can make us very ill, very quickly. To keep us purrrrfectly safe, skip the Lilium plant all together.

March is National Poison Prevention Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about the dangers of unintentional poisonings and encourage preventative measures, particularly for children and pets.
Here's a breakdown of what you should know:
Why it's important:
Poisonings are a serious issue:
Every year, poison control centers receive millions of calls from people seeking medical help for poisoning.
Many common household items can be dangerous:
Cleaning products, medications, certain foods, and even plants can be toxic.
Prevention is key:
By taking simple precautions, you can significantly reduce the risk of accidental poisonings.
Key Actions for Poison Prevention:
Store medications and cleaning products safely: Keep them out of reach of children and pets.
Read labels carefully: Always check ingredient lists and follow instructions for use.
Save the poison control hotline: The number is 1-800-222-1222.
Be aware of common pet poisons: Chocolate, grapes, raisins, certain plants, and some human medications can be toxic to pets.
Educate yourself and others: Share information about poison prevention with family, friends, and neighbors.
Recognize the signs of poisoning: If you suspect your child or pet has been poisoned, seek immediate medical attention.
Consider using child-resistant packaging: Many products come in child-resistant packaging, which can help prevent accidental ingestion.

Tip Tuesday:

Potentially the most important thing to understand before you attempt to hold your cat is how to pick them up properly. ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ’œ

โš ๏ธ If you simply yank your cat up off the ground, you could hurt them. This is especially true for large-breed cats.

โžก๏ธ When you want to pick your cat up, stay relaxed. Theyโ€™ll notice if youโ€™re nervous.

โžก๏ธ Crouch down to their level, offer a few pets or scratches, and then pick your kitty up by the rib cage while supporting their back legs.

โžก๏ธ You must avoid picking your cat up by the stomach, as this can be uncomfortable for them.

Meow, Clowder!

Parasites are common in cats and dogs, specifically young kittens and puppies.

Unfortunately, some of these parasites are zoonotic, meaning they can be shared with humans! That's one of the many reasons why it is important to provide year-round prevention for our furry friends, even if you live in an area with cold winters. These parasites can cause your pet to have issues such as anemia, poor growth, chronic watery diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, weight loss, limping, coughing, or fatigue.

These parasites can be diagnosed via an antigen blood test (which detects whether your pet has antigens for the most common flea and tick borne parasites) or a f***l examination (which checks for the presence of parasite eggs in the f***l matter of pets).

The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends the following tips to avoid infections in humans:
- Practice good hygiene and sanitation
- Discourage children from eating dirt or playing in areas that might be soiled with animal f***s
- Keep sandboxes covered when not in use (outside cats may use them as a litterbox)
- Wash your hands after handling soil and after contact with pets
- Wear shoes when outside. This protects feet from any parasite larvae
- Wash raw vegetables thoroughly
- Immediately pick up animal f***s from your yard, garden, and public areas and properly dispose of it.
