There are so many new titles and older ones that can confuse who to go to for behavior issues with your dog - Let’s simplify this 👇🏼
When dealing with dog behavior issues, it’s important to follow the right steps for the most effective solution. Here’s a suggested tier system for owners:
1.Dog Trainers
•Start with a professional dog trainer if your dog is showing behavior problems. Trainers can address most issues through obedience training and behavior modification.
Note: If the trainer’s services seem sloppy, miss the mark, or they cannot offer alternative solutions, this is usually a sign to find a new trainer, not necessarily to move up the ladder.
2.Veterinarian
•If a physical issue might be causing the behavior (e.g., injury, pain, illness), see your veterinarian to rule out medical causes like a sprained paw or other health issues.
3.Behavior Consultants
•If the trainer and vet can’t fully pinpoint the behavior’s cause, a behavior consultant can assess your dog’s behavior. They will identify the problem but cannot prescribe medication. This step might save you time and money while addressing the root causes.
4.Veterinary Behaviorists
•If your dog has a serious genetic issue or requires medication protocols, a veterinary behaviorist is needed.
This is a rare need; in over a decade, only a couple of dogs out of the hundreds we’ve worked with required this level of care.
Why Start with a Trainer?
• Dog trainers can often resolve behavior issues without expensive consultations or medications.
• Following this tiered approach can save you money and offer clarity on what to expect, ensuring your dog gets the right help without unnecessary steps.
• Remember: If your trainer is not providing quality solutions, it may be time to find a new trainer rather than moving up the ladder too quickly.
