Max is officially a senior, but you would never know. He zips around the play yard like a puppy. When he's done patrolling, he comes inside for snuggles from our dedicated care takers.

Happy Caturday pet parents!
Does your cat go outside?
Did you find a kitten outside you want to adopt?
What do both of these questions have in common?
Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV).
This virus is contagious and often a fatal disease that exclusively affects , posing no risk to humans, dogs, or other animals. Transmission primarily occurs through the exchange of saliva and blood, with grooming and fighting being the most common modes of spread. Although less frequent, the virus can also be transmitted through urine and f***s. Notably, FeLV does not survive long outside a cat's body, remaining viable for only a few hours. Kittens are particularly vulnerable, as they can contract the virus in utero or through their mother's milk. Alarmingly, seemingly healthy cats can still carry and transmit FeLV, making regular testing and preventive measures crucial for maintaining feline health.

Happy Wellness Wednesday!
Hope everyone is having a great week so far.
Let's talk about kennel cough. This infection is quite common, especially in dogs that frequent dog parks, doggy daycare, or boarding facilities. Canines with compromised immune systems, such as diabetes, cushings, or even just age can make your fur kid more susceptible.
This highly contagious condition is caused by bacteria that become aerosolized when infected dogs are in close proximity. Thankfully, the Bordetella vaccine is highly recommended for dogs at risk, offering crucial protection against this common ailment.

Wellness Wednesday friends!
The message for today is RABIES IS PREVENTABLE.

Rabies is a devastating yet completely vaccine-preventable disease that poses a threat to both humans and animals. This zoonotic disease is primarily transmitted through the saliva of infected animals, such as raccoons, bats, and other wildlife, and can be passed to our unvaccinated pets. Surprisingly, cats are more susceptible to rabies infection than dogs, with reported cases of rabid cats surpassing those of dogs since 1992. This alarming trend is largely due to the fact that cat owners are often less diligent about taking their feline companions to the veterinarian for regular check-ups and vaccinations. Ensuring your pets are vaccinated against rabies is crucial for their health and safety, as well as for preventing the spread of this fatal disease. Happy Caturday!
It's Immunization Month here at Chattahoochee Animal Clinic.
We are talking a lot about vaccinations this month and in the spirit of Caturday, let's talk about FVRCP a core vaccine for kittens and cats. FVCRP is considered a core vaccine for both indoor and in/outdoor cats. As kittens we recommend it to establish a healthy memory for the immune system. All three viruses are highly contagious. FVR and FCV are spread through sneezes, saliva or eye secretions, but can also be transferred through the environment. This core vaccine can help in prevention of these diseases.

Wellness Wednesday friends!
Immunizations and disease prevention is the topic of discussion this month.
Did you ever wonder what the DA2PP vaccine protects against?
It is what we call a 5 in 1 core vaccine. Multiple disease protection in one injection. This eliminates several injection sites.

Happy Caturday!
Did you know that the wild Margay is a mocking cat?!
The Wildlife Conservation Society researchers uncovered a fascinating and cunning behavior in the Amazon-dwelling margay, a small wild cat. The margay was recorded mimicking the calls of its prey, specifically the pied tamarins. This mimicry lured the curious monkeys closer, allowing the margay to attempt an ambush. Although the tamarins evaded capture thanks to one vigilant member's warning scream, this incident highlights the sophisticated hunting strategies of wild cats. Such behavior suggests a higher level of intelligence and adaptability in these predators than previously understood.

Allergic reactions come from so many different triggers. From flea saliva to native grasses. Our cat and dog friends are coming in for veterinary visits for ear infections, hair loss, red itchy inflamed and infected skin. It negatively affects both fur kids and pet parents. Having pet insurance can give you the peace of mind knowing you never have to compromise your fur kid's health care. Here are 3 tips to help keep allergies at bay: 1) Essential fatty acids & clean ingredient diets. Don't forget healthy grains like barley! 2) Bathing with a soothing hypoallergenic shampoo every 3-4 weeks and wiping our paws after playing outside. Great time to look for fleas, sores or changes to our skin and coat. Remember parasite prevention! 3) Use a ph balancing, ear drying ear cleaner once a week and also after bathing, grooming or swimming. Let us know how we can help!

Fear free Friday! Here we have sweet Hazel. As you can see she is allowed to explore the people around her. Her body language is of a curious puppy that is trying to trust and understand her surroundings. Dr Dawkins and Kennidy are giving her the freedom to give kisses and use up some of that energy safely, to allow them to perform a physical exam. Practice this at home. Securely place you pet on a table. it is best to have a buddy system, so one can perform the "exam" while the other holds. Do not over stimulate them. Keep this calm and quite. Allow your pet to be curious and accept the new place they are on. Proceed to look in their eyes, ears, touch each paw, lift their tail, feel their body and belly. Hold one of their legs. All of these things are parts of an exam. Don't stop if they pull away. Try again, maybe with a distraction. Kong's are amazing, because you can put a treat in them that hey have to work to get. This distracts them from the "exam" and allows you to perform all sorts of much needed maintenance on your pet. Cleaning ears, looking for a spur in their paw, apply flea medication topically, etc. Start with a few minutes and more practices during the week, especially before their visit. If they seem fearful, stop and communicate that at your visit, so we can give you more techniques. We provide customized preventative care based on your fur kid’s specific needs.

A big part of what we do is community outreach. We pride ourselves in giving back in any way we can. We visit several schools throughout the year to educate children about pet care and veterinary science. Our heart goes out to the less fortunate and we work closely with several rescue organizations, such as Angels Among Us Pet Rescue, showing support for local organizations like Shamrock’n For the Cure, CDA Toy Drive, working with our friends at Lucky’s Burgers and Brews, Downtown Pooch, just to name a few.
