This was such a heartbreaking and rewarding case to work on! Dr. Salopek was available on the weekend to offer critical care and save Roxy. Our entire team was reminded of how fortunate we are to be in a community with extra caring first responders!!
First Responders Show Compassion When Tragedy Strikes
On Sunday, July 28th, 2024, at approximately 1:00 PM, multiple emergency services, including the New Mexico State Police, Berrendo Fire Department, City of Roswell Fire Department, AMR Roswell/Chaves County, and Chaves County Sheriffβs Office, responded to a serious accident with injuries at the intersection of W. Pine Lodge Rd. and Roswell Relief Route. The accident, witnessed by a State Police Sergeant and Patrolman, involved a vehicle that rolled multiple times after being t-boned, ejecting two dogs from the vehicle. Tragically, one dog, Gus, did not survive, while the other dog, Roxy, sustained a significant laceration but was transported to Ceilo Grande Animal Hospital for treatment.
The male passenger of the vehicle was taken to the hospital by ambulance, accompanied by the female driver. The couple entrusted the emergency responders with Roxy, who recovered after a two-day stay at the animal hospital. During her stay, she received visits from New Mexico State Police and Berrendo Fire Department personnel. Roxy has since been reunited with her family in their new home state of Arizona. Gus was also taken to the animal hospital, and his cremation costs were shared by a Berrendo Fire Department member and a State Police Sergeant, allowing his ashes to be with the family in Arizona. All other occupants of both vehicles sustained minor injuries and were released from the hospital the same day.
