Patience training in regards to food will help, immensely, with a gorging eater... Bo has never been very bad about it, but it could stand some improvement.

When he reaches a fully calm mindset, he's "rewarded" with his food. The whites of his eyes are gone. His tail is hanging loose. His legs are completely without stiffness. And he's neither focused on or avoiding his food.... the existence of the food in his vicinity is of no importance to him. He shows no nervousness and no excitement.

Bo's weakness, as I said, isn't food... though he definitely doesn't go hungry. Bo's weakness is his inability to be calm. Very typical for bully breeds. He's either sleeping or darting. At first glance, excitement can look like happiness.... but if you have a dog that is NEVER calm, that excitement isn't happiness. It's anxiety. Can you imagine if you NEVER experienced a calm state of mind? Would you be happy?

We've had a busy weekend around here... a bunch of superstar dogs have made "busy" absolutely beautiful. I'm so incredibly proud of them.

We are so infatuated with our Pickle. She grows more amazing every single day. She joined us for some neighborhood assistance today. She definitely loves her kids.

And then there's Cav. Our therapy, teaching, emotional support, disease detection, guardian extraordinaire and family hub ol man. He was such a cucumber with kids and vehicles and smoke and lights and noises.... YES, he's sulking in the picture. But not because he's wearing curlers. He was pretty devastated when he was told that he couldn't get in the car before we took pictures. He waits, very impatiently, for that back door of the suv to open. He was feeling very mistreated for the entire photo shoot.

I was SO EXCITED to be given the invitation and opportunity to take a couple of our pups (in training for ESA) to a semi-local elementary school yesterday. Cav, our inspiration into ESA and therapy work, as well as our beloved pet and daddy to our pups, came along as a mentor for Freya and Pinto.... both of these two will be permanently residing in VA when their training is complete.

The school did a "baby farm animal" week for the pre-k classes... and while our dogs are not primarily farm dogs, we do spend a fair amount of time acclimating them to our livestock so that they don't react when they're performing their duties. At this age, the kids weren't at all interested in hearing about the jobs that farm dogs perform anyway, so we just talked about simple things... age of the pups and how long they sleep and how much they eat. Lol.

I was extremely impressed with the behavior of the kids... only one time did I have to scold a child for chasing poor Freya.

Events like this are my best tool for guaging where the strengths and weaknesses are in our pups... I watch closely to see their reactions to every little thing. Pinto needs a little work on self control as he wants to dive right into the mix, head first, because he wants ALL the love. ALL! Miss Freya needs a little more confidence... she handles fear very well, but she needs to be exposed to more situations so that she has less moments when she has to overcome it. All things considered, they did absolutely excellent... this was their first trip away from home other than vet visits and small family get-togethers.

My biggest moment of pride though?.... Watching my big guy as he walked, oh-so-carefully, next to a girl who has about four inches of visual ability... she held his leash, giving her the absolutely grand illusion of control over a dog that outweighs her by three times. In reality, he was being her guide. He walked at her pace, standing close enough to allow the girl to feel him. She walked about 50 yards or so and cheered for herself as she dropped the leash because she had never walked a dog before...

My eyes leaked a little....
