Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism in Dogs​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Hyperthyroid dogs have an increased metabolism, which leads to hyperactivity and weight loss despite a ravenous appetite. Which can cause the following symptoms:
- Increased thirst
- Increased urination
- Decreased energy level
- Vomiting
- Difficulty defecating (constipation)

How to diagnose hyperthyroidism:
- Routine physical exam
- Comprehensive bloodwork

Heart disease is less common in cats than in dogs. The most common type of heart disease in cats is adult onset hypertrophic (enlargement or thickening of the heart) cardiomyopathy.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​The most common signs of heart disease in cats are:
- poor appetite
- weight loss
- lethargy
- increased respiratory rate and effort
- sudden collapse
- sudden hind leg paralysis accompanied by pain due to thromboembolism (blood clots) which may be referred to as a ‘saddle thrombus’
- stunted growth (kittens)

How is congenital heart disease diagnosed?
- X-rays
- electrical recording of the heart (ECG)
- ultrasound examination (echocardiography)

Dog flu, or canine influenza virus, is an infectious respiratory disease caused by an influenza A virus.​​​​​​​​​ ​​​​​​​​​What are the symptoms?
- Coughing (both moist and dry)
- Sneezing
- Nasal discharge
- Purulent nasal discharge
- Runny eyes
- Fever
- Lethargy
- Difficulty breathing

Prevention
Vaccinate your dog yearly for CIV. If you live in an area with a high incidence of dog flu or if your dog regularly spends time in kennels or travels to shows around the country, then they could be at an increased risk of contracting canine influenza.

How Can I Tell if My Dog Has Urinary Tract Problems?​​​​​​​​​- Bloody and/or cloudy urine​​​​​​​​​- Straining or whimpering during urination
- Accidents in the house
- Needing to be let outside more frequently
- Licking around the urinary opening

How do you diagnose a UTI?
A urine sample is obtained from the dog to be examined for bacterial, crystals, and protein.

UTI are treatable and can avoid more serious conditions when caught, and treated early.

Let's talk about kidneys!​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Kidneys are an important part of filtering out waste. When this function is compromised it falls into two categories:
- Acute kidney injury
- Chronic kidney disease (CKD)

Why should I care about kidney disease?
It is estimated that over 1 in 3 cats and 1 in 10 dogs will develop kidney disease in their lifetime. Therefore, early detection is best!

What causes CKD?
Kidney stones, infections, including Lyme disease, toxins, injuries, generic abnormalities, cancer, and other factors.

How will I know if my pet has kidney disease?
Routine screening will help identify kidney disease. Changes in your pet's behavior, urination defecation and eating and drinking habits can be indicators or kidney disease.

What does that mean?
The good news is that CKD can be treated and managed with the help of your veterinarian. Changes in diet and the right medication can help your pet live happily after being diagnosed with a good quality of life.

Is it possible to train an older dog? Yes! The process can take a little longer since you will likely have to undo some bad habits your dog picked up along the way. BUT a little patience goes a long way.

Getting a no-pull harness will help keep your pet safe and avoid putting strain on your pet's neck.

Steps on leash training your dog:
- Get them acclimated to their leash
- Teach them to sit when leash is out
- Teach them to refrain from chewing the leash
