Oliver is the most handsome and distinguished gentleman, but he recently experienced multiple episodes of urinary obstruction. Urinary obstruction is a medical emergency in any species and can be life threatening if not treated promptly. After multiple blocking episodes, Oliver’s mom chose to pursue perineal urethrostomy for him. Perineal urethrostomy is a surgery where we create a wider urethral opening to prevent future episodes of urinary obstruction. The Monarch team loved working with Oliver and we are so happy that he has recovered well from surgery. Enjoy your obstruction-free future, Oliver!

Bayleigh is a gorgeous, 11 year old, dapple Dachshund that was diagnosed with a thyroid tumor after her mom noticed a growth in her neck. The Monarch team traveled to her primary care veterinary clinic to perform a thyroidectomy, or removal of her right thyroid gland. Dogs have paired thyroid glands, one on the left and one on the right of the trachea. Occasionally the two are connected by a thin strip of thyroid tissue, but in most cases they remain separate. Removal of one thyroid gland still leaves plenty of thyroid tissue to provide normal levels of thyroid hormone in the body. Bayleigh has made an excellent recovery from surgery and is enjoying her tumor free life!

Earlier this month the Monarch team had the pleasure of helping Wade feel better by removing his cancerous spleen. Wade was previously diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma and it had unfortunately spread to his spleen (among other sites). The expansion of his spleen by the cancer was causing Wade discomfort and he was bleeding into his abdomen, making him feel weak. We removed his spleen as a palliative measure, meaning we aren’t able to cure his cancer but the surgery helps improve his comfort and energy level. Wade’s spleen was very enlarged and weighed 4 pounds on it’s own!! His mom reports that Wade is feeling so much better after his surgery and that his appetite, energy level, and playful spirit have returned to normal. The entire Monarch team fell in love with this sweetest boy and we are so glad that we were able to help him enjoy life again!

T***k is a 12 year old indoor/outdoor kitty cat who came home limping after a short trip outside. X-rays showed that he had dislocated his left hip. We recently performed an FHO (removal of the femoral head and neck) to alleviate his pain.

He is the sweetest boy, always purring and nuzzling us as we examined him! He handled anesthesia without any complications and is doing great at home since surgery last week.

Meadow is an incredibly sweet 12 year old Miniature Poodle that lost her right eye due to trauma several years ago. She has since developed a cataract in her left eye which left her unable to see. When she suddenly became painful in the left eye, she was diagnosed with an anterior lens luxation. Since she was already blind and had adapted well, the recommended treatment was enucleation (removal of the eye) to relieve her pain. Monarch Pet Surgery performed her enucleation earlier this week and she did amazing! Even though she is an older girl, she handled the anesthesia beautifully and was eating dinner normally that night. We are so proud of her and loved being a part of Meadow’s care team!

Rookie is an adorable Aussie-Doodle that tore his right ACL in January. ACL rupture is the most common orthopedic injury in dogs and it results in instability of the knee. TPLO surgery stabilizes the knee by changing the slope of the tibia (shin bone), which changes the interaction between the bones at the knee joint.

Rookie had a right TPLO last week and is doing great in recovery. Once his bone heals up he will be able to run and play without pain. We loved working with this sweet, curly-haired boy!
