Bella has the spirit to reclaim a little happiness. We will do our part to make this chapter of life filled with romps in the sunshine.
Sasha found the toy baskets! She’s on a staycation while foster mom is on a vacay 😂 She has also been doing an excellent job chasing the squirrels that try to raid the bird feeders!
Some dogs are just special. Sweet, gentle Jasper, was worthy of being called special. We sadly share that he crossed the rainbow bridge earlier this month. He was deeply loved in his foster home and then when he was adopted the flood gates of love opened up. We share the tribute that his loving family shared which us. Our heartfelt condolences go out to them as they grieve this loss.
I met Jasper one week shy of three years ago at a HHBR event at Barnes and Noble. I sat on the floor with him, he ground his face into my knee, and I knew that he was my dog.
Jasper had just turned 10 when he came home with us. To us, he’d always been a sweet old man. He dozed much of the day, rousting himself to give one of us a woofing if we left and came home or ambling down for a boisterous Basset 500 and then napping off the effort. He snored. He had a sideways paw and an ever evolving list of minor medical conditions that required medication schedules so complicated that we sometimes printed spreadsheets to keep track of what to do when. Sometimes he’d go for a walk in the yard and seem to break all four legs. But when he wanted some loving, he did a fancy high-stepping walk with a big grin.
He was a dog of habits. And his habits became our habits.
Dinner was at 6:30pm. Around 6:00 he’d sit directly in front of you, stare dolefully, and silently puff his cheeks. Until you inevitably got up around 6:15 to feed him early. Directly after dinner, he’d need a knee. He’d come find us and grind his face into a knee while he got his ears rubbed. Then the after-dinner bathroom break. And then a nap until it got dark. After dusk, we’d open the front door and shake the greenie container to bribe the big scary black cat back inside so that the coyotes didn’t get him. Of course, the cat had long since learned to hide just out of sight until after dusk in order to get treats. The shaking of the greenie bin woke the dog, who came running to get his dental bone. Which he woul
We are sad to share that HHBR alumni CiCi crossed over the rainbow bridge recently. We offer her wonderful guardian, Rachel, our heartfelt condolences.
Cici came to us from a hoarding situation out in rural central texas. She had tumors on her mammary glands and after 5 hours of surgery, she was delivered to her amazing foster mom. Her foster lived in a 3rd floor apartment at the time & carried her up & downstairs to go potty. This is when Rachel says she fell in love with her. The rest and best part of Cici’s story is shared by her mom, Rachel below.
Cici spent her golden years as an only animal in the house which she whole heartedly enjoyed. She loved her treats, vegetables, fruit, and anything else human food! Her favorite activity was “hunting” for carrots or celery hidden throughout the house after coming inside from a walk. She loved going for long, slow walks so she could take in all the smells! She also loved when mom would get deliveries because she got to tear open the boxes so mom wouldn’t have to do it herself. She was mommas shadow and always kept her in her eyesight. When mom got the vacuum cleaner out, it became a battle of two old enemies. Cici would always win and it’d have to go back in the closet. Cici hated baths but it always gave her the zoomies! Even the neighbors knew how much she disliked baths because mom would get an earful that could be heard several houses down. People often said her eyes felt like she was staring into your soul. She was a gentle, kind, and loving soul. After getting her freedom ride from Joanne at HHBR, Cici spent her days showered with love and pampering. She is deeply missed. ❤️🐾🌈
HHBR Alumni, Lucy, letting everyone know she has a new sweater & is ready for the chilly temps we are having tonight in Central Texas. Show us how your hounds are ready for the chilly weather!
We offer our heartfelt condolences to the Saunders family. They honored HHBR Chloe with a beautiful tribute last week when she crossed over the rainbow bridge.

“Tomorrow we say goodby to our sweet Chloe girl. In 2008, I was at Melissa's house and saw her and went, "Huh. I didn't know I needed a dog." I wasn't looking for one, but I knew she was mine. So she came home with me and we've been together ever since. Before I met Charlie or had kids. She is the best bassett hound on the planet, sweet and gentle and patient.
Her very favorite thing to do is sleep. In the sun, preferably. And to eat. Especially if she isn't supposed to. She hit a point around 10 years old where she decided she was done with walks and would go about three houses before laying down in somebody's driveway until we carried her home. It was hilarious.
It is past time to let her rest, but we will miss her dearly, me most of all. So because the rest of the weekend is going to be the absolute worst, here are a bunch of photos of this delightlful, goofy, amazing girl.”
We extend our deep condolences to the Garner Family, who were the loving guardians of Lola. She had a home filled with love and cookies for the last chapter of her life. She was Lisa’s little shadow and will be missed deeply. She was sweet and loved when the grandkids visited.
We shared a wonderfully funny story of Lola’s antics previously but it’s worthy of being shared again.
Please read all the way to the end. 🐾❤️🐾
Oh Lola!! Our Foster Coordinator received a few frantic text messages about Lola’s antics recently. 1st msg from foster mom: “Lola ate 7 of these. (See cookie photo below)I had them put up high. I guess it wasn't high enough. She ate the plastic too.”
2nd msg from foster mom(about 4 hours later): We have found all the bones except for 1. She buried them all over the back yard. She keeps bringing them in one at a time. They are still sealed.
I keep telling her what a good girl she is and give her a treat each time she brings one in. 😂🤣.
Oh, Lola!! We hope that you hide all the cookies and enjoy eating a few too. Until we meet again, sweet girl. 💕🐾🌈

Lucy is on a trial visit & clearly enjoying herself!
🐾❤️🌈 We are sending the Gunn family our heartfelt condolences as they grieve the loss of their beloved, Buster.
They shared some of their fond memories with us. “Buster was a happy, sweet, mischievous boy who loved his family, his buddy Bear, and his many friends of the two-legged and four-legged kind. He was a rock star at the HHBR gift wrapping fundraiser at Barnes and Noble in 2019. He loved wrestling with Bear, rolling in the grass in his back yard, car rides, walks in the park, and salmon skin.”
Buster was deeply loved by all that knew him. He will be missed and we are grateful that his life was full of love. ❤️🌈🐾
Miss Georgia is showing us her playful side! She’s found a unicorn stuffie that she really likes. 🦄❤️
Here’s Gus playing with his favorite toy ( actually all toys are his favorite!🤣). Since he had his dental done he is more interested in toys & eating so much better! Thank you to all our supporters who help us make these dogs whole again! We appreciate your continued support! Next step heartworm treatment for this guy!
Our heartfelt condolences go out to Francye and Dan as they mourn the loss of one of their own. Francye has shared a beautiful tribute to “the heart of their pack”. 💕🐾🌈
My heart is broken, our Jazz passed away April 27. She had a fast growing tumor in her abdomen. She was 14 years old with a mild heart murmur and most likely would not survive the operation. A part of my heart went with Jazz when she left.
Jazz came into HHBR in 2009, she was about 6 months old, and recovering from bilateral FHO (Femoral head ostectomy) surgery. She had been kicked by a horse and both her hip joints had been severely damaged. The ER vet called and asked if the rescue would take her after surgery as she would need weeks of PT. Her prognosis was uncertain -- she might not walk again and certainly wouldn’t be able to jump up on things or run around like a normal basset hound. However, Jazz didn’t speak “people” so she didn’t know she wasn’t able to run and jump and walk. Even though her recovery took time, within a few months Jazz was not only able to walk but to run and play with the other bassets at our house. We were blessed to have her as a part of our pack.
She was the heart of our pack. Jazz ruled the roost and every foster who came into our home knew she was “large and in charge.” Although she was the smallest of all our bassets.
At HHBR events she was an official greeter. At our yearly Christmas book wrappings, she would scamper to greet anyone and everyone who walked in the door and then promptly lie down in front of them and roll over for belly rubs. She would do this even when we met people out on a walk. Everyone loved giving her pets and belly rubs. She was convinced that anyone who came to our house had come to see her and give her belly rubs.
Jazz had the softest fur of any basset we ever had. Even the vet techs at our veterinary clinic remarked about Jazz’s soft fur.
Dan and I will always remember those winter nights with the fir
We sadly lost an HHBR Alumni. He came to us in 2019 and he had a past we were unable to share. We attended to his emotional and physical needs as he battled cancer. His foster family named him Stosh and he felt safe in their care. In the final chapter of life, he was adopted and he became lovingly known as Charlie. His days were filled with so much love squeezed into them. His family shared some of their favorite moments they shared. We offer our heartfelt condolences to Charlie’s family. We are grateful that his story had such a happy ending. His best days were with you. 🌈🐾❤️
“Charlie was like my shadow, if there was ever a bond between two souls, Charlie and I shared that bond. He followed me everywhere. While teleworking I would shut my home office door to join a video meeting and he would push the door open, look in and wander off as if to simply check on where I was.
There were several occasions when he would decide to join the meeting on the couch behind me, which was in full view of the rest of the people in the meeting. He was quiet for the most part until it was my turn to talk. That’s when he felt it necessary to explain to me (and the group) there were unauthorized people walk down the street.
Lorena had many of the same experiences - when Charlie would monitor her whereabouts - usually at your most vulnerable moments. When Lorena would take the dogs for a walk, Charlie would object with a constant stream of “Woofs” if he wasn’t at the front of the pack. Only when he was the “lead dog” in the parade would he settle down to a trot down the street with the authority only a basset can wear.
One of the many little things we found endearing is as we would walk him, he would drag his back feet and the tops of his toenails would scrape on the sidewalk.
Although each of our dogs have been special and our favorites in their own way, Charlie was one of the best. Although we only had him a little over 2 years, this little guy has made a pe
Sweet Buster crossed over the rainbow bridge on March 17th. He was deeply loved by the Garibay family and we share their sorrow in his passing. We offer our condolences to the whole family including his partners in crime, Henry, Lucy and Peep. ❤️🐾❤️
We offer our heartfelt condolences to the Guilianelli family. They recently lost HHBR Alumni Penny. Many of you that came by Barnes & Noble at Christmas time would have met Penny with her companion Sheldon. They have now reunited across the rainbow bridge. Penny was deeply loved and will be equally missed by many. Until we meet again sweet Penny. 🐾💕
